writingwyo's Journal, 15 May 2022

Well this is odd. The biggest difference between last week and this one was that I started exercising more. 🤔 No, not a one-day bobble -- I use a 7-day average Not going to worry too much about it at this point. I was told here on FS the other day that sore muscles can retain water.

Yes, it's normal. And a good sign you're not dehydrated :-) Just watch your salt intake.

I do drink a lot of fluids, albeit a huge chunk of that is coffee ☕😉 Still counts. Good advice on the sodium, so I checked my reports and seem to be doing ok on that front. I'm pretty sure my sodium intake is lower than FS records, because I get dinged for things I don't do. eg. I don't add salt to pasta water, but the FS penne entry includes sodium. I try to find entries that are accurate (Trader Joe's brown rice doesn't include salt, whereas the generic brown rice does), but I also don't want to make myself crazy worrying too much about it 🙃

There is a lot of hidden sodium. I track/research it bc of high blood pressure I wouldn't normally have. Just a heads up, nothing to go crazy about :-)

There is indeed, but not a super huge concern in our house because we eat so few processed foods and almost never eat out. A lot of recipes that call for salt, we don't put nearly as much in or even bother with it. I don't know how anyone can manage to reduce salt without a lot of home cooking and whole foods

Our one big salt bomb I will confess to is homemade sauerkraut. I figure I make room for it by minimizing elsewhere, and I like getting some fermented foods in the mix. I can usually still keep it under 2300 mg even with the sauerkraut

That's the rub! I home cooked every day for the past 2 years. 95% from scratch. (also made my own pasta). I shouldn't have hbp. The flash frozen chicken breasts soaked in salt before being sprayed then flash frozen. Just an example that was shocking. Now I'm recovering from the after effects of it. We just didn't know what was causing the water retention before. Like I said, just a heads up!

Appreciate it, LivinBreezy! 😁 I'd totally forgotten they did that to chicken, not that I'm buying it these days. But so many ways sodium creeps in in our current food environment

Even home cooking can rack up the sodium count — if you eat cheese, bacon, sausage or lunch meat. I realize that you don’t do that, but other dieters may.

Indeed it can, JustBananas. One of the best things about my current path is it's gotten me off cheese.

@JB, The flash frozen veggies are also sprayed with salt for preservation. (They don't add that on the pkg notes). Veggies/fruits are my preferred food. Sorry WWyo, just meant to give a heads up.

I think that there is a 1-5 pound fluctuation every day! It is crazy. I've learned to not let it make me too nuts!

Sorry to burst my bubble or for bringing it up? 😜 Either way, thank you! 😁 You are bringing up good information that people need to be aware of 👍 If my reactions came across wrong, my apologies. Text is an imperfect communication tool

saigegirl -- mine doesn't go 5, but I've seen it bounce 3 in a day. I remind myself there's no earthly way I could have consumed 10,000 extra calories in one day 😜

@Writing, if you aren’t eating crazy new foods, and you’re exercising more, I’d be willing to bet $$ your muscles are swollen/retaining water. As you go further down the exercise rabbit hole, be careful not to flush other important electrolytes out of your system with too much water/coffee. This will actually increase water retention. You are so careful/aware of/in tune with your diet, I wouldn’t suspect excessive sodium at this junction. Still good to be careful, however. When are you planning your next ride??

We always know when we are doing good as far as eating goes. I have 5 pound swings in weight all the time and it's not uncommon for me to take more than a week to show any loss at all.
