Apparently, the human body learns to adapt to whatever you give it and after a while, it gets by on less, causing you to be tired, grouchy and starving. It's trying not to let you starve to death. Understandable, but enough to piss you off.

After eating 1000 calories a day for most of April, my body said "Enough" and I stopped dead in my tracks for nearly 10 days in terms of weight loss. I was losing 2 lbs/week, then - nothing. Flat.

The cure is to eat more for a little while and trick the body into thinking it's not starving so it backs off. I wish I could just send a memo: "Dear Body, this is what we're doing. It's important if you want to live in the long run. Please top trying to do an end run. Sincerely, The Management."

Luckily, Northernmusician showed me some articles on Metabolic Resistance from this Dr. Jade guy that described exactly what I'm going through. Because I never cheat or binge, my body adjusted. Unreal, but true.

Back on track now.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I have averaged 1350 a day for the last 3 months, but for one reason or another I have been averaging a bit higher for the last few weeks and I'm still losing about the same amount of weight. I make a point of having at least one day a week where I take in 1100-1200 and at least 1-2 days where I take in closer to 1500. It seems to work for me :-)

That's the concept behind 'reverse dieting' at the end of a weight loss. If you're eating at 1300 cals, you go to 1400 and the body takes it in. After a week or so, you add another 100 cals... and the body takes it in. You keep doing this and your body tends to adjust to your highest calorie intake without much in the way of glitches. It will also have you gain the water back slowly and you're less likely to panic thinking you've gained 4 pounds of fat over night. I think now that I'm where I want to be with my weight, having lost the weight, and having gained some back slowly to support my activities, tapering calories will be a far more logical way of approaching losses and gains. I don't mind counting calories. It's a lifestyle thing now. It really doesn't take much time.

This makes so much sense to me. Our bodies are pretty adaptable machines. I cracked up a bit though thinking that every cell in your body may well be thinking it wishes it could send a memo that says "Listen management, you may think you're in charge but we have a bigger say in this than you think. We're going to learn to work with what you give us. Sincerely, The Machine!"

I did the same thing when Leona was in the hospital. Spent so much time running back and forth; also dealing with the possible sale of my house (which fell through)that I just didn't care that I wasn't counting or keeping track. For several weeks, I didn't gain a pound. Didn't lose any either, so just maintained, which was fine. Then, when things started easing up, I also noticed I got more relaxed in what I ate. 3 lbs up and I got back on the bandwagon. Lost those 3 again, now I need to plow through. Good luck to you as well Mrsmole! We're all a work in progress!

Definitely adapts. I tend to lose pounds after I up my calories a few days and then be good and go back to my goal..hadn't really thought much about it.

Thanks Kat. I'm keeping notes. I want to be sure the basics are all covered before starting to write about the technical and semi speculative. It's not that I doubt the benefits of reverse dieting. It's that there are broader topics that need to be explored and understood first.
