FitOKay's Journal, 15 March 2014

First, what is everyone's views on cheat days? I've been thinking of making Sunday's an official cheat day. I wouldn't be crazy binging or anything but probably hitting around maintenance and just not worrying about logging that day each week (weather I'm sick or healthy lol). Sunday is normally my husband's weekend day off so we have church, family lunch out or at home and then the evening and dinner at my parents with my sister, her husband and kids, and my brother and his girlfriend. It would be a nice day not to have to remember to track. Thoughts? Concepts? How cheat days worker or didn't for you?

Weight news- Up point 2 =p Eh, I ate a lot at supper last night. I knew I would and tried to limit my snacking and brwakfast/lunch during the day. Fish/seafood is my favorite food group, doesn't really matter what kind or how it's made. But this fish was batter fried and salty... so that's my .2lbs =) In reality I didn't go too far about my upper goal range (1150-1350). Hopefully be able to start settling down into a 1250 average now that the mini lung crisis is passed.

Happy Saturday Everyone!

I believe that during a cheat day you may consume too much calories and it may mean your slimming down rate would be too slow. Therefore I think that one full cheating meal a weak (starter, main course, dessert and wine) is a better choice.

I don't have one. "Cheat" isn't a word we use with WW. We have our daily points and then additional Activity or Weekly Points we can use for treats or special occasions, with the realization that our weight loss may be less or non-existent if we use too many of them. My mantra is, "Is this food really worth the Points?" If it is, then I have it; I record it and "take the Points" to cover it, no guilt. If not, I move on to something else. I believe that thinking of yourself as "cheating" is detrimental to your efforts in the long run. But that's just me.

Agree with Gabija. Don't go for broke, but define what "cheat" means for you. Maybe workup that meal plan in the log so that you know (ballpark) where you are for the day when you eat such a meal. Then, no worries about breaking the food bank!

I'm defining cheat as a day I cheat on tracking, not as a day I cheat by overeating and eat over maintenance calories. When I track myself when I'm not limiting calories (like the last couple weeks while sick) I tend to hit right around maintenance calories(I gained weight during my pregnancies, but outside of pregnancy tend to sit at whatever weight I'm at unless actively trying to shed weight- I tend to naturally eat maintenance levels), so while one day a week at maintenance might nominally slow my weight loss, I don't think it would drastically interfere with my long term goal. Thank you for your input on the concept, I certainly see why it wouldn't be a great idea to over eat 0.o

I heard not long ago that those who long term keep their weight off basically maintained excellent eating during the week, and slacked off during the weekends. Makes sense, what you do most of the time leads to long term success. I find that even when I log everything on a day with "too much", the monthly calendar that averages everything out mentally tells me 'nice job'. It's important to be kind to ourselves and not hate meal planning.

It's very interesting to see the comments and how things would or wouldnt work for others! I'm (obviously since I posted this) leaning towards the idea of a Sunday cheat day. But I completely understand how a cheat day could be the worst decision ever (maybe a little over dramatic lol) for other individuals. Obviously I'd be re-evaluating and probably occassionally tracking on Sunday to make sure I'm doing ok. I spent 10 months not tracking after I lost the first 8-10 pounds, just sorta fell off the wagon getting frustrating wigh my lungs and running (rather lack there of). When I came back this year I was about a pound difference from where I left (down at that). So personally I'm not worried I'd be cheating myself into a gain, but I agree with the need to be aware and careful I don't.

When I used to do crappy diets for years I always tried having a "cheat day" and it would always turn into 2 days or a cheat week! Now that I'm serious about my weightloss I'm not kidding myself, I KNOW I can't have a cheat day or even a cheat meal. It might just be me but it wouldn't work for the way I am now. Hoowever, I know it works for a lot of people and it may work for you :)

LOLOL!!! So funny!!! I used to make Sundays a cheat day too. BUT, I figure now days that I'm gonna have one now and then whether I plan it or not. That's just speaking from my own experience. So, I have cheat days too just not by a plan, lolol!!! ( just putting in my two cents :) )

I think it's alright to go off the strict plan for a meal or even a day BUT I still log it in to make sure I haven't gone so far off the plan that it will take three days to make up for it! So many restaurants now have fun things that are not terrible - we went to the Good Egg for breakfast with friends the other day and they list calories for each selection. I had a Nurse's Bialy breakfast - 480 calories. It was an eggwhite omelet, a small dish of gfruit and a whole wheat bialy. I ate half the omelet and half the bialy - a smear of lowfat cream cheese on the bialy and two cups of coffee with milk and sweetener. I figured I ate a total of 350 calories - enjoyed every bit and had the left overs for the next day. Look for the fun but not fatty stuff when you eat out - they are there! And, always plan ahead of time to take half home! I'm in Tucson so we keep a cooler bag in the back seat for taking home leftovers.

Christina, that's mainly why I'm unsure. With my lungs I have unplanned days or weeks where if I get even a common sinus cold I'm going to be seriously sick and I don't bother to calorie limit at those times because I'm just focused on breathing. Plusobviously being unable to exercise then as well. But at the same time I had a cheat day last time I lost weight from my oldest's pregnancy (two cheat days a week actually- my days off work). Part of me feels like I shouldn't over punish myself for having bad lungs and do the one cheat day at least. The other part is going- realistically a cheat day will slow you down some and fair or not you've already hadcto switch from outdoor running to indoor bicycling, so maybe no cheat days is just another sacrifice for dealing with loosing weight with bad lungs. Just a little torn 0.o Might try it for a few weeks and then re-evaluate.

Accenture, that's a good point! My husband is a clean your plate kind of guy but I always try to plan to have half for another meal =)

Gabija, if the cheat day seems to be too much when I re-evaluate I'm going to take your advice and just do Sunday dinner with the extended family as my cheat meal a week =)

Erwin, it sounds like we have different connotations of the word cheat in this context. I don't think of cheat days or even meals in the same way as 'cheating the system' might be thought of. Rather as 'a day off'. Thank you very much for your input and I checked out your profile and you are totally inspiring!

LuC2, that is good advice =) KMKelly, I think I'm on the same page as you, ty for the input. Wannabe, thank you for the input and I totally see how that could be derailing. I love your minigoals =)

I'm an addict so I cant cheat. Its why I'm here again. Give me an inch, I'll take a mile.

Thanks CalynLZ - I appreciate that context, and your compliment :) Kris AZ, you sound just like me :) This is why I CANNOT do the new Simple Start on WW, I HAVE to track. Someone at one of my WW meetings heard I was double tracking both on WW and FatSecret, she questioned how I could really "keep up" with what I was doing, as in doubting I could for the long run. Later she apologized (I wasn't offended) and I told her I had to at least try to do it. I'm only 10 months in to this life change, and I hope to live many many more years with a normal weight and reduced chance of meeting my Maker while still too young to collect my Social Security someday (if it's still there!!) :D

I think a cheat day is very important as it allows you to have someday / something to look forward to. Imagine if somebody is forced into dieting because of weight / health issue. It is so miserable not to be able to snack on his favorite he might not be able to carry on with the dieting on a longer term.

Cheat days are one of those things that I still haven't figured out whether it works or not because I have too many unintentional cheat days to tell the difference between that and a strict diet :)
16 Mar 14 by member: euheide
But my "cheat days" are never that far off. I mean I don't eat double the calories or anything. If my RDI is 1600 calories, for example, I will often times go to 2100 or a little more lol. Not intentionally though, it just happens :)

And the results I get the day after are 50/50. Some days, I will lose like a kilogram, other days I will gain a kilogram. I think those changes are mostly due to bowel contents and the real change is probably manifested throughout the week by more minor changes in weight. Whether it is up or down, I still don't know :)
