Debbie Cousins's Journal, 06 August 2021

Weight up this morning. No BM yesterday or this morning to help it along. Plus, I had a bread binge yesterday. Throughout the day, I ended up eating FOUR slices of Dave's Killer Thin 21 Whole Grains & Seeds bread, a White House roll, and half of a Dave's Cinnamon Raisin Bagel. SIX pieces of bread al together, YIKES! I'm already off to a bad start this morning - had the other half of that bagel with 1oz of cream cheese on it and had a slice of toast with butter, AND I'm sitting here thinking about how much I want another slice of toast!

Kids are coming over today and I'm taking them to the community pool. The girl who has been doing my grandson's swim lessons is going back to college next week, but I called the pool and found out that they are offering 4 lessons for $60. That's the same price I had been paying our girl, but the pool's lessons are only 1/2 hour and she was doing 45 minutes to an hour (depending on my 5-year-old's attention span). I think it is a good investment, though, and I really want him to get good at treading water and floating on his back - things that could save his life someday.

I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but my brother drowned when he was 11 years old, on a family vacation at the Colorado River in Mexico. He didn't know how to swim and even though my dad was WITH him in the water, he just disappeared from view and by the time he was found, it was too late. So, that's why I have made sure that my children and now my grandchildren learn to swim.

Somebody asked yesterday about my beans. They needed to have new soil this year, which I didn't realize until they only yielded FOUR green beans among the 14 plants! I let them all die (out of vengeance) and will try again next year with nice, new, nutrient-rich soil!

Good for you, teaching those grandkids to swim! It's an important skill.

So sorry about brother. I had a family member drown at the age of 18. I was a child and I still remember how awful it was. I made sure my kids were comfortable in the water and now the grandsons. They all swim like fish but also have a healthy respect for water. Have started with the granddaughter now...

About the bread...that and pasta are things I really have to watch as it seems the more I eat of them, the more I want. I actually keep my bread in the freezer and pull out only what I need at that moment.

Make a giant bowl of fruit and eat gobs of that every time you want to reach for more bread!

So sorry about your brother... that must have been an awful experience for you and your family. As for the bread cravings... maybe you should have your blood sugar checked??? The prolonged fast may have created you to become insulin resistant. Just a thought. According to a recent New York Times article, the more carbohydrates you eat, the more you'll crave them. This is because eating carbs causes our body to produce insulin. Increased levels of insulin signal to our bodies to accumulate fat and burn carbs.

Hey Debbie, have a better day tomorrow! Sometimes we just have to enjoy bread to appease our appetite. I have been trying out different keto types of homemade bread. It still awakens the bread cravings, but at least it is better for you. Mug breads are most satisfactory because once you eat it, it is gone and not tempting you to eat just one more piece.
