mrsmole's Journal, 22 February 2014

And there it is, a new low, partly due to some water weight finally going bye bye. I expect to stay steady here for a few days, but losing at the rate of 1-2 pounds a week is my goal, and I'm happy with it. I know I keep saying I'm happy with it, but you'd never know it from the way I complain about it while waiting for that inevitable drop! Sorry you all had to suffer along with me. Haha.

Going to the gym again late in the day. I'm going to try a trick I read in someone's journal: get on the treadmill for 5 minutes. Then the next time 6 minutes, and so on until I can actually do 20 minutes. Right now, I can't.

I'm all about progress, not perfection.

Awesome!!! Nice work hun. When I do the treadmill I don't worry about speed, I go for heart rate. So even a normal to medium walk speed while playing with the incline will get your heart rate up into the right range. Just don't over do it. Speed on the treadmill will come in time. I remember long ago when I started doing the treadmill that I could hardly stay on the damn thing. After a couple of months I was on for 45 minutes or more doing sprinting with some guy next to me like we were racing. It was a blast. I am not back at that point now but with time, I will be.

I purchased a good treadmill just over a month back now. On the day it arrived I went on in the morning for 15 minutes but only on a low speed about 2.5 MPH. I came off feeling good so went on again in the evening and did the same thing also came off feeling good. That night I had an uncomfortable night with a strange3 feeling in my left leg, not a pain just uncomfortable. By mid morning I was in pain so called my doctor who asked me to come right in immediately. To cut this short I was immediately admitted to hospital for emergency surgery to remove a large blood clot from behind my knee. It is now a month since I had that procedure and I am back on the treadmill supervised and monitored by my doctor. I am told that with the treadmill speed is not so important5 it is duration I should be going for. I can now do a 30 minute walk at 3 MPH which takes me just over the one mile point. I am advised that when I can do the one mile with reasonable comfort then and only then should I consider boosting my distance to about 1.5 mile but continue at 3 MPH. I am advised to continue in this manner until I can manage two miles and then increase my speed over time with my body telling me when to increase. I hope this is useful to you and well done with you weight loss. I look forward to achieving a similar loss soon.

Mrsmore, congrats! keep the good attitude, I knew it was just about time that the numbers needed to catch up again. Perhaps you might want to try the eliptic at the gym?

Congratulations! I simply can't wait for tomorrow morning! I'm trying not to psyche myself out, since two weeks ago I didn't have ANY weight loss. I've exercised more this week than the week before, so I'm really hoping that jump-started things. Wish me luck!

Bwy39, I also developed blood clots a year ago after a change in medication, fortunately they found them in time and I was put on Warfarin for 6 months. You're right about the duration being better than the speed. Nice and steady... mrsmole--good for you, your progress is truly inspiring. Keep at it.

I congratulate you Dear Mrs Mole you are doing so well. I always feel that success is something we have to earn it is never given. I also think that losing weight is a sentence for a crime we have committed in the past. All crimes carry a sentence of some sort and we pay the price. The crime of putting on weight is punishable by.... A change is food Increased exercise Hard work and dedication Deprivation of the things we enjoy and many more. Dear Mrs Mole, you have proved that you did the crime and are now willing to do the time, well done indeed.

I'm reading all this and can't help but wanna ask: What's with the blood clots and treadmills?

As a nurse, without knowing ALL the facts, my only observation is that people who have diminished blood flow in their legs and very little previous exercise regimen have to be careful when they first start to exercise because the increased demand for oxygen, combined with diseased arteries that don't respond as expected, can lead to pain in their limbs. If they had formed clot(s) in their body previous to the exercise (which can happen with a sedentary lifestyle, or after surgery or lots of air travel), then too much exercise and the subsequent oxygen needs = increased blood flow which can "throw" a clot. This can be life threatening. When I worked in a clinic, if a patient complained of one limb causing them 1) pain 2) increased or decreased coloration compared to the other limb 3) coldness/numbness, especially with exertion, we made them come in right away and then scheduled an arterial ultrasound to rule out blood clot. The instructions the hospital had us give them was that they were, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES to walk at all. They needed someone to accompany them and helped them into a wheelchair. This is one of the reasons it is recommended that people see their doctor before starting a diet and/or exercise program. Most of the time it is a silly precaution, but for a rare few, it can SAVE THEIR LIFE.

Wow, I learn so much here. I know that blood clots can be deadly. Thank you Gillian and Bwy for this great info. I managed 20 minutes of walking in real life yesterday (Costco) and felt great about it!
