mrsmole's Journal, 21 February 2014

Well, I'm up a pound but it doesn't count because I ate a pound of watermelon after dinner last night and my prunes didn't work as expected. :(

I've been steady at an average of 1200 calories per day this whole week, so it's bound to catch up soon.

Thanks to all yesterday who helped me get over my obsession with the scale. Well, let me rephrase that. I'm still obsessed with the scale and weighing myself daily to see results, but I now know that the number just don't matter as much - they will keep going down based on the fact that historically, they always do!

Have a great weekend, all!

I weigh every day, but I put a weekly number on a calendar by the computer. Right now, every Sun is the day that I enter my weight for the week. You can really see the progress that way and know that those ups and downs during the week level themselves out. I just hope they go in a downward slope.

^^ yep I weigh everyday too sometimes more. I enter my weight on Saturdays always hoping for a smaller number.

You know another little annoyance? As much as I love FS, if you gain 2 pounds, FS tells you, "You are gaining weight at the rate of 16 pounds per week!" and you wanna say, "Um, yeah, I'm really not, so SHUT UP!" It does the same when you lose weight. I wish it wouldn't say that. It's just silly. I wish it would tell me my average weight for the last week or something useful. :)

DBOZA...I do too. I have wrote my weekly weight goals on a calender each Sunday for the whole year. When I weigh in weekly I jot down the new # & I am able to see my progress at a glance. It is very motivating! I also took a sheet of graphing paper & made a weight chart similar to fs weight history chart & posted it on the fridge as a constant reminder of how I'm doing.

MrsMole-- Yeah, it irritated me at first, but now I just ignore it!! It also told me today since I lost 1 lb, that I'll reach my goal weight in 2 months.. Gives you hope then shoots you down. No way can I lose 1 lb a day for 2 months. I do like the little green arrows point down on the weight history and now since I change my goal weight I'll be in the yellow... Yay!!

MRSMOLE...I agree with you about the statement fs flashes at weigh-in. It is almost discouraging to see it after a good loss. Maybe its for safety reasons they post it.

MYA, I love your weekly goals on the calendar. I will do that, too, just to keep things in a short-term perspective. It's really just a one day at a time thing. And maybe that's why I weight daily, too, just to keep things in perspective. Thanks for the tip!

I switched from weighing daily to only doing so once or twice per week. it was a struggle at first, but I was getting too obsessed at well, and it was effecting how I felt for the rest of the day. For me, the less frequent weigh ins are working better, but thats me & i know many here do weigh daily. And as you so wisely already know, you are so much more than any number on the scale! xoxox

You always have the right attitude, hence your success.

Bet you'll be singing a different song tomorrow!

Great attitude!!! How often do you workout??? Your fat intake and are carb intake are on the high side....and a lot of them aren't good fats or good carbs :-/ Maybe adjust your diet a little if you're not happy with the results you're seeing

Jess, when ingesting less than 1200 calories per day, do you believe that carb and fat type matter as much? I was kind of going for a "take in 1200, burn 1800" simple math type of diet and damn the torpedoes on the "good fat/bad fat". I still weigh so much (232) and have so much to lose (over 80 pounds) that I figured I'm no where near that kind of dietary tweaking yet. I'm just at the point where I quit eating refined sugar and fast food and I'm real proud of that! I just joined the gym a week ago. I'm working out 3X a week and starting slowly with a trainer. Joints are weak, muscles are weak. Thanks for your input!

Not an expert. I've been just trying to keep my calories averaging between 1200 and 1400 with the total fat at around 30% recommended by the American heart association and exercising. I don't eat a lot of meat so most of my fat is good. Now I haven't been good the whole time but have been since September of 2013.. it is working for me. Lots and fruits and veggies.

Also whole grains and beans

It seems odd to me. Okay, first, I'm a protein hog okay? So, take this with a grain of ... never mind. At 1200, if 70% of your calories come from carbs, you're still on a low carb diet. Maybe not in ratio, but in fact. Carbs have certain functions that they will fulfill. They'll do that first. I'm not seeing ridiculous nutritional choices in your journal... other than that 450 calorie salad I saw. :D

Good for you! I was also a bit obsessed with the scale, actually had to move it to a lower shelf in my pantry, as I used to weigh every day too. But I've found it's like a reward for myself now to actually wait and only do it once a week. By not weighing every day, I don't get frustrated when I do go up on occasion, as I realize that there are day to day fluctuations.

I weighed 250 when I first started,I want to lose at least 80lbs myself. In two weeks I lost 5lbs by purely doing 26g of good fats, 90g of good carbs, and 150g of protein a day. No exercise just my daily routine of taking care of my toddler and in two weeks I lost 5lbs, by literally doing nothing other than watching what I ate. Yes, your carb and fat type ALWAYS matter. Ideally you should split up your meals into 3 main ones and two snack, which is nearly impossible for any person with a working life or any kind of life for that matter. At least get three main meals, your breakfast should have the most calories and your dinner should have the least. Good luck with whatever way you choose to diet though

Jess and NM. You both make excellent points. I'll be perfectly honest. I'm going for progress, not perfection. I must admit here in front of God and everyone, I've come SO FAR. A year ago, I wouldn't have written anything down or given a furry rat's fanny what I ate. I'd start out with gallons of coffee and soda, lots of drive-thru and fast food, and if I had a bad day, I'd go to the store and grab about 5 candy bars and nurse them over a 4 hour period of time while watching TV, all after three or four square meals a day. So from that to 1) logging every bite 2) 1200 calories 3) total refined sugar abstinence 3) alcohol abstinence 4) caffeine abstinence 5) joining a gym and working out three times a week and 6) owning my own business and working 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week (that hasn't changed since a year ago). Not making excuses, but I am saying that at this time, I'm not prepared to do more than I am doing now. I've lost 48 pounds since Sept 15th without breaking abstinence from any of the above mentioned, without ONE CHEAT DAY. I do not feel deprived. I do not feel depressed or miserable. My only gripes are occasional constipation (hereditary) and the scale going 8 days flat then dropping 3 pounds at a time. Go figure. Might be female stuff! My doctor says I'm doing great. Can I do better? You bet! But I'm doing the best I can with what I've got right now. I live a very "on the go" lifestyle and I'm this close to moving to a Medifast type diet where I eat 5 meal replacement bars a day and one "real meal" a day, but I tried it for a time and felt homicidal with hunger. It was only for the sheer convenience that I was attracted to it. Bottom line: I'm doing what I'm comfortable with. And if my fats are not all great, then I'll strive for improvement as I go. I am not comfortable with more than 2 pounds a week loss, so this is fine, but if 5 pounds in two weeks by eating good fats is working for you, then that's amazing and it will be worth looking into further down the line. Toddlers might be the secret to weight loss - don't they run around a LOT? LOL!
