mrsmole's Journal, 20 February 2014

It's funny. I have amazing discipline in every aspect of my life and diet with the exception of one: The Scale. I just cannot resist the urge the weight myself and see those results each and every morning. And while I'm not expecting "instant" gratification as NM has written about in his Journals, I am expecting SOME gratification, otherwise, what is the point?

I've been flirting around the same weight for the last 5 or 6 days. I know that irregularity plays a part in it, and I know that slow, gradual weight loss means exactly that. Slow. Gradual.

But still.

My biggest problem still lies between my ears. I'm a computer repair professional by trade. When a hard drive is being scanned, I'll run a diagnostic tool. I tell the program to run, hit the button and walk away. After 10 minutes, it might say 17% complete, a few minutes later 22% complete, and in an hour, it's 100% complete. What I guess I'm saying is that I'm logical, and I'm accustomed to steady progress. In the same direction: Forward.

Now what I'm NOT used to is for the program to say 22% complete after 10 minutes and then a few minutes later tell me it's only 17% complete. If it did that, I'd tell my client, "Your hard drive is shooting errors and it's trashed. Sorry." And I would go to the garage and take a hammer to it and smash it to bits so no one could ever get data from it.

So you can see how difficult it is for me to accept that I weigh 2 pounds less on Monday, 1 pound more on Wednesday, 3 pounds more on Thursday, and by Friday, I'm back to the same as I was on Monday again. WTH? It makes me want to get my hammer!

Why can't bodies be like hard drives? I don't care if the progress is slow, but please let it only be in one direction: DOWN!

I so envy those of you who weigh in 2-3 times a week. I wish I could do that. But alas, I'm doomed to torment myself with these daily ups and downs. I know the downs will eventually come, but what a tortured path it can sometimes be.

If anyone here has a trick for weighing in less often, I'd love to hear it.

First thought that comes to my mind is: Give my husband the scale and tell him he can only give it to me on Monday Morning. That way asking for the scale makes u accountable to only ask for it once a week. Just a thought. (good luck) ;)

Mrsmole I can get where you are coming from because I do the same thing at the gym. What kills me is when I go in I am one weight, but when I leave I weigh more. Can't figure that one out, look at it this way, something is better than nothing(and I know easier said than done)keep up the great work

Most defiantly get someone to hide it for you. I put my a way and try not to think about it and just say focused on what u can control and that is your eating and workouts. Best of luck

Babe's idea sounds great. Hopefully with it being out of site it will be something you think about less. You’ve made such incredible progress with your current routine is it possible that your body is used to your daily habits and needs an adjustment to give you the change in weight that you are looking for? Maybe it’s time to change it up a little to keep your body guessing. It just does not make sense to me how our bodies work.

Once a week only.....! Loved the computer analogy though lol.

The scale can be your best friend or worst enemy...i usually only weigh myself once a week at the most because I was sick of having the scale dictate to me whether I'd have a good day or bad. Give yourself credit in knowing that you're doing all the right things (when it's true) and try to reduce the number of times you weigh yourself. Hope that helps!!!

I do the same thing. Except I do it TWICE a day. I weigh myself before going to bed and then after going to the bathroom every morning! The ups and downs are interesting to say the least! I just use the information to try to learn what makes me gain and what makes me lose. At least that is what I tell myself! I know I should go to just once a week...but then I would go off the rails and gain like 10 lbs in one week...

I do the same. Every morning I wake up and tell myself NOT to go near the scales, but by the time the kettle has boiled Im stripped off standing on the damn thing. Its ridiculous because in my head I know that our weight goes up and down during the course of a week but if I see it go up I am SO disappointed. Thing is though, if I left it a whole week and I had gone up Id be even more upset, thinking I could have done something different if Id known earlier. We just aren't rational when it comes to this lol

So interesting seeing everyone's perspective. I've thought of so many different ways to handle this. I've considered keeping the scale at a friend's house who live 1/4 mile away and having to call first to go over there to use it and walk 1/2 mile round trip to use it. I've considered going to the mall and pay .25 cents to use one of those fortune teller scales at the arcade to weight myself. I've thought about going to the vet and using the giant metal dog scales when no one is looking. You wouldn't believe the crazy #### I've come up with. In the end, I got this awesome Omron scale that measures BMI, visceral fat and it might even wash my car if I read the manual, I'm not sure, lol. It's very cool. That being said, I'm an addict, I admit it, I probably need help. But one 12 step program at a time, if that's okay??? I'm already in OA! Haha. Thanks to all for the suggestions. I promise not to complain as much. I know intellectually that human bodies aren't hard drives and they go all over the place. Thanks for the tips. If only I had the same restraint for the scale as I do for sweets and carbs! LOL.

You are so right. It has got to be the most difficult thing not getting on the scale EVERY day. I to give in an get discouraged with the fluctuation of my weight. I work so darn hard at the gym and nothing. Im impatient as well. "Give me a little something". Im trying the low to no carb and low calorie diet and it is actually working. It all depends on the individual person I guess. Stay positive.

P.S. Birtull, I read your blog and made a comment. Thank you so much for sharing that. I really enjoyed your post and it was like you were reading my mind!

I'm the same way! AND I will weigh myself 3-4 times in a row, just in case the scale was mistaken. It's pretty stubborn, though.

so, i have been reading all of your comments and i am the same way! i do the paleo "diet"... i have cut out ALL carbs, except fruit. seriously! no bread, pasta, no sugar except a little bit of honey. only meat and veggies. i weigh myself every morning and i lose at least 8 oz to a lb every day to every other day! no S&$t! but you can't cheat, when i have dark chocolate i miss two days of results. if i eat white bread, FORGET ABOUT IT FOR A 5 DAY STRETCH!! :( good luck! i hope this helped. :)

I do not think it is a bad thing to weigh daily. After all, do you know how much damage can accumulate if you are (unknowingly) on a wrong path, and only weigh one a week? By weighing daily we can nip these things in the bud!

I was exactly like you. I would make sure that weighed myself every single day. It started driving me more and more crazy. So I had DH hide the scale. I didn't go looking for it. I still don't know where he hid it. He would get it down once a week on the day I was to weigh. Then after I left the bathroom the scale would be gone again. We did that for almost a year. It worked. I still have to fight not going to the scale. But I am able to fight it. But I really can't wait for weigh in day. :)

Dom. If your trainer flexes and you giggle, you have to tell me. :)

I weigh every day also...I think seeing the # raise motivates me to make better choices for the day. Seeing the # go down makes me smile & be happier & then I want to keep that up,so I continue to do my best for the day! If the # doesnt change I am happy I didnt gain & again I'm motivated to work a bit harder cuz IT NEEDS TO MOVE!:D

I too am tempted to weigh every day BUT! A friend & I agreed to share our weight on Friday mornings only - naked (the weighing, not the sharing - ha)...I think the weekly thing might be more effective; at least I'm hoping so!!

Wow, you got great progress! As far as the scale goes, I do the exact same thing but I don't let it get me down regardless of what it says. I say if you want to weigh yourself everyday, then give in but don't let it mess with your head. In other words, don't weigh yourself expecting anything other than it giving you the current numbers. So what if it stays the same or goes up a pound or two... let your body take care of what it needs to do. Keep truckin!
