59Carol's Journal, 09 January 2021

The weight gain on Christmas is officially banished! I am logging in a weight a half pound lower than where I was at Christmas morning! I aim at a one-pound loss per week so this week losing 1.4 pounds is particularly satisfying.

Basically, I have kept on with the general eating plan and was rewarded. One thing I tried last night and plan to continue is to actually plan my evening snack. I have been free wheeling it with a few ingredients 'planned' for but they were on a grazing basis. Last night I made a dish of 1/2 cup of thawed frozen cherries, sprinkled on a tablespoon of crushed walnuts and a tablespoon of shredded coconut. It felt quite festive and there was no need to graze for more.

I have gone 'exploring' for new venues for my outside exercise. Our tiny hamlet of 60 people has developed a Chickadee Lane which is a walking path in some bush that is in the hamlet. Bird houses and lots of donated bird seed is dotted literally every few yards. The paths are somewhat cleared in the winter. I took my snowshoes in and had a beautiful walk with huge spruce trees covered in snow, lots of birds flitting around and the air was filled with bird song. That plan is a keeper! I tried to upload a picture of it but apparently it is ‘invalid’! It took me almost a half hour to do one circuit. Then my walking partner suggested we walk on Crooked Lane. It is a county road with lots of curves that does not see much traffic. We walked there for an hour and saw no traffic at all. The road wound around and the sides of the road are lined with trees. Since it was plowed it was easy to maintain social distance while we walked. I plan to take my sister there today for our walk.

All the tile is laid in my basement and it looks amazing! The grout isn't done yet but that will come this next week.

Thank you all so much for your positive feedback. I am feeling good about the journey! Ruthe, the reason I have a place for snacks is that I have one in some form each night. Since I do it, I need to do it with a plan. For the longest time I gave myself some nuts, honey and dates to choose from to graze on. I found that I was eating a lot of those items in a number of moments. To address that I decided I would take a custard dish and half fill it with cherries, sprinkle some coconut and crushed nuts on it and have just one. In the long run, I believe I will eat less than just going back a few times eating the other. Especially dates which I seemed not to keep at just 3 (more like 9!)

You're doing great! Having a plan, a plan that works, is key, isn't it? I sure enjoy your description of your walking areas. They sound beautiful. I remember a long while back. you posted photos of your house, the exterior, and it was so beautiful and serene. I can just imagine how beautiful your entire hamlet is. 😍👍😊

ccandco Thanks for the compliment. I have to say that my hamlet isn't particularly beautiful - a bit of a frontier trailer town. It has the look of impermanence however it has been here since 1930! The surrounding country is gorgeous. My husband and I would refer it to it as God's Country. The people in my hamlet are amazing and kind people. I could tell so many stories of small kindnesses given and received. I love being a part of this community. I have lived here since 1981. My home is about 3 miles from the hamlet which gives me privacy while allowing me to stay connected to the people.

Many of you reference the fact that I have a plan. I would be lost without the pre-planning and the myriad of habits and routines that I have built up during the entire journey of weight loss. My first journey happened 20 years ago when I lost 150 pounds. Lots of lessons learned. Then about 10 years ago a second journey of losing 100 pounds again. This is the third journey and I intend the 100 pounds of loss this time to be the last time of losing this much weight. I have certainly evolved in how I view weight loss and have fine tuned many of the lessons learned. Truly it is all about habits and routines to sustain me no matter what is happening on any given day so I am not thrown off.

Thank you! I am very excited about my home upgrades. And right now walking is quite pleasant as the weather is hovering around the freezing mark. Recently I have been walking with three different partners so that is fun too.
