drmcdougaller's Journal, 31 December 2008

I am going to be a true vegan this coming year because I know that dairy causes arthritis. I am eating more greens because they are chock full of vitamins and minerals. I don't put salad dressing on them because the fat defeats the goodness in them. More fruit for snacks instead of some processed "dessert." A handful of nuts to get my omega 3's. Bob Greene suggests to weigh just once a week instead of once a day. Perhaps I will try that. I will keep walking and stair climbing. I am looking forward to another wonderful year of conscious eating and choosing good foods. Happy New Year 2009!
luv, mary

I hate to be 'that guy' but..Dairy does not cause arthritis. A percentile of people can carry allergic reaction to dairy, which can cause the reaction. If you know in fact that you are part of that percentile and your dairy intake greatly increases your arthritic pain, then that would be a more accurate statement. But otherwise, it is like saying "dairy causes skin problems & acidic stool.".. It can be true, but only for those who lack the enzyme to break down lactose. (Lactose Intolerancy)

I think there's something to be said for that weighing once a week thing. I've been weighing myself daily, with its ups and its downs. And yesterday's up got me so out-of-whack emotionally, along with not feeling well physically, that I overate big time! I think that I might have avoided that pitfall if I'd not weighed myself. So I might also turn to once a week. By the way, a small amount of olive oil and a little vinegar would be a healthy salad dressing, if you're missing it.
