Katsolo's Journal, 13 February 2020

No food reason for this, walked last night, ate reasonably well, just a fluctuation. People I work with might say I'm full of something, I suppose. For those wondering, here is a screenshot of about 1/2 the data. I don't have time to fool with copies, filenames, etc. this morning, but you get the idea. Yes, I went up, but body fat is down (for the week, I think) and muscle mass and water weight are both up. I didn't check my settings for this visual, but the scale is a really great tool. Onward, going to be a crazy day, so just putting my head down and working.

If I didn't have the visibility into the numbers and if my pants especially weren't showing me I was changing, I might have lost my mind by now. So, if numbers are your thing, it's a great tool.

WEIGHT 162.2lb
BMI 32.8
FAT MASS 65.7lb
LEAN MASS 96.6lb
WATER MASS 67.7lb

Just wondering how does the scale know all that?

@Fritzy, here you go. It's not a full on medical device, so there's going to be some level of inaccuracy, but it shows me trends. Body Fat Scales Body fat scales use a technology called bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body fat. A small, unnoticeable electrical current is sent from one foot, up one leg and down the other leg. Fat is a poor conductor of electricity compared to other components of the body such as muscle. The more resistance the electrical current experiences, the higher the fat. Body Fat Scale Reliablity A "Consumer Reports" study of body fat scales supports what many health and fitness experts say: that these scales are not as accurate as other body fat measurement methods. One issue is that the current runs from foot to foot and therefore is only measuring fat content in the lower body. The Consumer Report study found that the best scales were accurate up to 80 percent of the time. Further, there was no consistency as to whether or not scales reported a higher or lower body fat content. Because of these widespread inaccuracies, "Consumer Reports" no longer tests body-fat scales. Although the scales aren't always accurate, they can still be a tool to measure progress if you test your fat percentage under the same conditions each time. https://www.livestrong.com/article/354963-how-do-body-fat-scales-work-are-they-accurate/

Thanks Katsolo. I didn't realize there was so much to it. I thought maybe you just enter your age, height and gender and a general calculation was made. Like the BMI calculator I found online.

It’s not that bad, you enter your personal data once on an app. After that, you just stand on the scale.

It’s such a small change. Body does what it does on a day to day basis. Looks like a little water weight.
