Snowwhite100's Journal, 31 March 2019

I would like to fast longer to get the cell turn over of autophagy to tighten up my loose skin after losing weight. I am so much more wrinkled. I like the way Caravan Carolyn, on YouTube said it. She said she "deflated". But I don't think I can. Maybe if I am stricter in getting my carbs lower I won't get so hungry. Or maybe being at a lower weight, 108, I don't have the reserves. I tried fasting longer years ago and was miserable. But then I was on a "sugar" based diet at the time, rather than a "fat" based diet. I have been getting better at getting them below 30 some of the time. I don't know how you Keto dieters get them under 20 on a consistent basis. It really takes a lot of determination. I can't imagine eating that way for the rest of my life. Thirty or thirty five seems to be the best I can handle. Keeping them under 20 would have to be for a limited time, I think. Wow, the ones of you that keep them down are very inspiring. Intermittent fasting is what has helped me so much. I can make it to 16 hours fine. I can, some of the time, with more effort make it to 18 hours. But any more, I usually get dizzy and miserable. More than that are "few and far between". Eating window 8 hours.

@Snowwhite100, I think you're doing *just fine*, keeping carbs under 30g and practicing 16:8 intermittent fasting! I averaged <36g carbohydrate in January, when I was most vigilant, but 55-56g in February and March when I wasn't as careful. (It's a good thing I have 29 more days in April, since I ate 66.58g carbs today!) I'm heartened by two pieces I posted to my journal, "How low-carb is keto?" and an interview with Dr. Ben Bikman about protein and ketosis. Yes, 20g total is "strict keto," but you're well within the "moderate low-carb" range (21-50g). My blood ketone test results are *still* registering around 0.4-0.6 mmol/L. In Dr. Bikman's opinion, that is within range for "nutritional ketosis." I'd make a reasonable guess that your blood ketones would be better that *that*. Don't be so hard on yourself, my friend!

About "autophagy" and skin tightening: Ken Berry, M.D., did a video on it. He noted that, even with autophagy, "extra skin" is consumed at a rate of about *one percent per month*. At 65 years old, I know I'm aging. Slowing the aging process AND the progress of chronic disease AND possibly reducing the risk of dementia are *tremendously positive* outcomes. Can autophagy do all that AND reduce "extra skin" AND reduce wrinkles? Maybe... But I think my time is better spent focusing on the benefits I *know* I'm getting.
