baskington's Journal, 19 October 2018

okay this has been creeping up this week and it stayed for 2 days so I am owning it. my calories have definitely been within my maintenance range and I am doing my exercise. so the big change is my coffee drinking and eating higher ratio of protein lower fat. While I know the change in the fat can make a difference in my ketone levels, the coffee is the major culprit here. It spiked my glucose level and dropped my ketones down big time. this is with or without cream so it is definitely the coffee and stevia combo. So no more coffee unless it is a treat on occasion. It is messing up my fat losing. the higher protein lower fat will definitely effect my ketone level but not to the point of bouncing me out of ketosis.

after a big eating night, still within my calories, fasting readings 1.3k and 4.2glucose, after a good sized breakfast 2 1/4 hours .9k and 5.4 glucose. this meal should keep me most of the day without feeling like I am starving like yesterday

and I almost forgot, I overslept today for the first time! that's a win

Baskington, I think the Stevia is your enemy. I know you have read the research; sugar of any kind, artificial, derivative, or real is all processed the same by the body.

Can you do black coffee? I never thought I would but do it all the time now. Caffeine is praised as a great tool for weight loss all around..

Must agree with you, CB1006, coffee is seen to have health benefits. Remember when it was the bad guy?

If I do remember I didn't care, I like my coffee and iced coffee way too much.. And 3rd shift doesn't help. Polyphenols are also supposed to help especially while fasting even with decaf.

Glad you are able to get some quality sleep. It is so important.

nothing in coffee should make you gain. It is the stevia, creamers, sugars, honey, whatver that people add to the coffee. Buy plain black coffee beans or ground coffee... add water. Thats it.... nothing else.

I can't see why coffee would be the issue either, I would lay more blame on the sweetners.

I have food intolerances and the coffee is definitely one of them, I have spoken about this before. So I understand other people not understanding food and drink intolerances. just plain coffee without anything gives me brain fog and if I drink enough coffee I get knots in my neck. so I know and have known for years this is a problem for me. But thank you for your thoughts. I am having problems with much more than just coffee but since I am on a beef and water only diet with occasional additions of pork or chicken lately it is easy to pick up which things cause me issues. my allergy testing have shown once again my problems with veggies and with nuts. Just the way it is for me.

Sorry, Baskington, really didn't know that piece of information. I am definitely not helping with my comments. Have you been able to drink tea? My mother developed an intolerance to coffee and switched to tea that has caffeine. Or, is it the caffeine itself?

Green tea is known for its healing properties.

I did watch a clip where it said caffeine can release glycogen stores from your liver. So the other day , to experiment, I had a hint water with caffeine (60mg) and it spiked my sugar and lowered my ketones. So you may be sensitive the same way. Sugar release will spike insulin and can cause weight gain.

I am going to try having no coffee tomorrow and see what happens! I’m so interested in the spiked sugar information!

erquiaga no tea is horrible for me, I get really ill. I have had problems with coffee and horrible confusion and brain fog for years and honestly I have been fighting this one restriction. I don't like being restricted and while I have no problem giving up a lot of things as I don't like most of them (veggies) I was hoping that with just eating meat and fat I could get away with it. And with all my symptoms settled down and doing so well I just flat out cheated with my coffee because I could manage the couple hours of brain fog. but to also cause me to gain weight (and constipate me) I just have to go without. Just the way it is. I am not going to waste my time any more on something that interfers with my fat loss.

yes Adef it is really a surprise to me too and to also drop my ketones like a rock too was the clue. these couple pounds will come off in a heartbeat and not worried about those. by Monday they should be all gone with maybe a little extra if I don't get frustrated again and overeat.

Yes Viola caffeine and coffee can definitely effect ketones for some people. and artificial sweeteners definitely do the same negative effect on many people. most of us know this but many that are just beginning have not had the experience with testing different foods effects on our progress and overall health. I think it is great your brought it up again.

Yes Nikeit I am very happy my leg cramps have all but disappeared with the addition of a really effective calcium supplement and the other bonus is I don't feel dehydrated all the time any more. plus's all around. I am still careful to drink enough water as it is still early in my healing process, but it is all just great!
