8/115

I was watching some of the Beckenridge 2018 videos on you tube last night and caught a good one by Steven Phinney about fasting being a double edged sword. He says about the damage that fasting over 48 hours can do. I think that I already knew most of it. I've cut my fasting back to under 48 hours these days anyway, but I know to make sure that I add plenty of sodium, potassium and magnesium and to drink lots, but he's right there does need to be more research done now that it's getting to be so popular. I see on Facebook that there are people fasting for 20, 30 or more days - without their doctor's help.

He is talking about fasting in the purist sense of no calories in.

There’s always going to be people who take an idea that’s good then extrapolate it to something dangerous. Usually because they haven’t done the research nor prepared correctly. If I get time I might look up some of the videos - thanks for the pointer. Take care!

He'd given an invited talk on low carb/fasting and told the organisers that if they had the pro talk then he wanted to do this one, as he wanted people to be aware of the pitfalls - and for it to be properly researched.

Sounds like a guy with a brain. I was considering fasting but I don't think I'd be any good at it and it would make me ratty - and I'm ratty enough these days! And you are right Phooks, there will always be some smug idiot who boasts about doing a thing wrong! Mini, do what works for you but keep it safe, you know your body. Nice drop too.

My concern with people fasting for long periods is the fact that they're not getting all their vitamins and minerals. This also is my concern with low carb or low fat diets. I see so many people just eating cheese and meat with no vegetables at all or being so strict with low fat that they can't be getting the fat soluble vitamins. I don't like to critisise other people's diets though. I just worry about their health. It's the "mum" in me, probably 🙂

He was talking about magnesium, sodium and phospherous - people take on multi day fasts without worrying about their electrolytes. Too little salt is actually worse for you than too much. Your body will get rid of too much, but it you don't have enough sodium then your plasma thickens and it causes all sorts of problems.

Oh Mini, people are so silly about things like salt and fat, we all need them but the trick is to know how much. I think people are basically either lazy and want research handed to them or are just looking for a bandwagon to jump on and get totally the wrong end of the stick. I always prefer to do my own research and it's so easy now with the internet - as long as you read a number of articles from respected sources and not just rags like the Daily Hate.
