I am not hungry - I do not need to eat

Glucose reading: 96 mg/dl

So I broke my 11 day fast yesterday. I held out until the afternoon, then I had a 400 calorie bag of trail mix from the vending machine at the office and it was on!

Insatiable hunger, both mental and real. This launched me into eating Lemonheads candy, bag of Quest potato ships and a huge FEAST of ribs (hey kids don't refeed like this at home!).

When this hits, there is no stopping it. You know what is happening... intellectually. You REALLY want to stop, but you can't! I ate until stuffed, waited 20 minutes, then ate carbs again until stuffed. I even snacked on a bag of frosted cheerios while lying in bed last night!

Get on the scale this morning and haven't gained a pound, wait! What??!

Oh must be that pound I gained yesterday WHILE FASTING! :) :) That pound that came from drinking only 300 calories yet running 3 miles and walking 15 steps...

Anyway, I know I should always feel gratitude and recognize the blessings.

Right now it is the morning and I AM NOT HUNGRY - therefore - I DO NOT NEED TO EAT. Period. This knowledge is the gift that 11 days of fasting provides me.

I don't need to eat "a little something" to get me through the day. The 'mental' BS in my head that "I just want to F##King eat something" was satiated yesterday.

This gets me off the train of hunger to constantly 'try to feel full'. Listening to those people who tell me: "You have to eat to fuel your body!" or "You need to eat or will crash your metabolism!". This has sentenced me to obesity all my adult life.

I think you have to go through an extended fast to believe this. No one can tell it to you. I have mentally committed to only eating only once tonight. I know I can do it.

We have dinners and events planned this weekend. I WILL gain weight. My primary goal this weekend is to try to minimize the weight damage I will do until my 5 day fast re-starts this Monday.

However, today I have the freedom to make a decision to temporarily free myself from this uncontrollable physical and mental addiction to carbs, by using the tool of fasting.

The path to mental freedom is through conscious upgrading of your mind. Fasting is/has/and will continue to reveal this to us. I got an espresso yesterday around 2 to thrart hunger and there were some freshly baked pastries that I couldn't stop staring at for I'm guessing 3 minutes. I had to fight myself to NOT buy any because putting that in my mouth would have caused my appetite to instruct my pie hole to "RELEASED THE KRANEN" on every food in sight. Way to go Ade, you FASTING BEAST!!!!!

@chesgreen - You totally understand! I also drank a coffee yesterday to 'thwart the hunger' and put too much artificial sweetener in it (I mean a LOT - this spikes my insulin). This started multiple coffees through the day leading to the KRACKEN (219 carbs!). Today I am fricking drinking only water and green tea (with a SMALL amount of sweetener) until dinner (gonna drink that cream sickle drink tonight for the first time). Without this site there is no way I would not just say F##K IT!

It's advised, that when ending a long fast like that, to ease back into eating food. Perhaps in a few weeks, trying another fast for not as long and end it a little more gracefully.

@MillaLite - That 96 was the highest I have seen in 11 days (because of the fast) :)

@HCB - Yes that makes sense.

I know - sometimes I will "kill it" at the gym and lift heavy (for me) and the next day be up...then a woosh down after another day or so

@puzzud - Due to scheduling (hard to find a weekend where I have no 'events' and can fast) I wont have a chance to do more than a 5 day fast anytime soon :( As far as refeeding, I always PLAN to take it easy. But, as soon as food hits my mouth (not even my stomach, just the mouth) , the 'plan' collapses. The only control I have is 'during the fast'. Fasting is not just a 'nice technique' for a person like me, it is a 'tool for survival'. :)

@adef Do you have personal data that shows BG spike from sweetener? Also, what sweetener?

Thanks for the thoughts on the pitfalls of mental (conditioned) eating. Since I reduced my portions as a WOE I really can't binge like I used to...I get so uncomfortable and even though I feel the need to clean my plate or tell myself I need to finish because it is so good or there are starving kids somewhere...just mental sabotage. I really appreciate your post on the fasting - it is really interesting. I hope you have a great day on your adventure.

@jimmiepop - I only use Splenda (however, I use massive doses so it tastes really sweet). I will try to measure more carefully this week because my past measurements had other foods mixed in.

@tahoebrun - Thanks! Reduced portions work, even for me... when I do it. But, I then get a second meal 20 minutes later :(

The binge after the fast is why I do Atkins "fat fast" instead - 4 x 250 cal of high fat foods for 2 to 3 days. It's just enough food to keep me from being hungry, yet gets results.

@gz9gjg - Even when I am not hungry... I still eat :(

@jimmiepop, @MillaLite - I finally did a decent test on the effects of Splenda on my blood sugar. Keep in mind I am using 8x the normal amount of Splenda (I like a REALLY sweet taste). 108 5:30am (waking fasted). Drink green tea with Splenda. 123 6:30am (1 hour later). 105 7:30am (2 hours later). So it spikes it, but, not much. However, some days I drink this throughout the day while fasting. No wonder Dr. Fung does not approve :) I am sure he wants my blood sugar to just sit in the 70's all day long. I'm probably spiking it into the 80's every few hours (but bringing it back down with my running and walking throughout the day). God knows I don't *need* to drink this. I claim 'mental crutch' on this issue :)
