adamevegod1's Journal, 25 February 2020

I've been taking an antibiotic since Friday evening (I only take them as the very last resort, kinda regret not starting sooner). As predictable I'm starting to have intestinal issues. I've always had a delicate constitution. Today I went to the Vitamin Shoppe and purchased Dr. Mercola Complete Probiotics (70 billion CFU). I've never taken any before, so I looked online for reviews and read everything from "a waste of money" to it will "grow a new limb." If you have any experience with probiotics in general would you share your experience, and if you have any experience with Dr. Mercola's product specifically please comment on that as well. I feel it's taking me forever to get back in the game.

So sorry, adamevegod1. The only probiotics I have used are those naturally occurring in nonfat plain Greek yogurt. Or a non-dairy option such as Good Belly no sugar juice.

Research liquid acidophilus. I used it for years. Best if you take both capsules and liquid. Also, make sure it has the correct numbers , so that it's actually working.

I will check that out Becc.

Erquiaga, I eat plain, non-fat Greek yogurt but this antibiotic wreaks havoc on me. always has.

I agree with Becc@, probiotics are your best bet. In 2013 the FDA finally issued a warning that almost all leading antibiotics may cause nerve damage! Sadly I did not discover that until AFTER I became a victim! I have hand no feeling in my left hand since April 2016!

The liquid works for immediate relief and the capsules are to build up good bacteria over time. Sure hope to feel better soon and can get your gut in a healthy state. 🙂👍

I drink kombucha, a fermented probiotic green tea everyday. It helps me maintain my weight and protects me from getting sick.

yo, for real don't bother with pills, enjoy some NANCY'S YOGURT for breakfast every day! It's got a great blend of stuff. L. rhamnosus LB3 has been shown to work well at improving the efficiency of antibiotic regimens and your L. acidophilus LA-5 is going to be good at helping recolonize your intestinal tract. When it comes to pills or even food with probiotics, your gut will react differently to different strains. More than anything, just be mindful about putting good food into your body to help repopulate those bacterial colonies properly in the month following your antibiotic course!

I'm a huge fan of Progurt. It is made with human probiotic isolets and has bacteria count in the trillion. It comes in granular form and has to be mixed with liquid. The taste is somewhat yeasty/nutty. It can also be used to make your own yogurt. They were a godsend when I was struggling with gastritis and colitis.

CebuCowboy, sorry for the ill effect you encountered. I only take antibiotics as the last resort. I've known 2 who have died due to C-diff because their good bacteria was stripped from their gut. I think my supraspinatus delaminated due to former use of antibiotics, and my brother nearly lost his mind and is permanently disabled because of them. They are bad stuff, but when your sinus infection is lasting weeks and getting worse, sometimes leaving it alone can be worse.

moopie321, the heat from brewing the tea doesn't kill off the probiotics?

RiverQueen, and Sisterwentsilver, I appreciate your responses--I have more things to research. Thanks.

You add the scoby to the sweet tea when it is at room temperature, then you let it ferment for about a week.

Hi @AEGod, I have used a variety that I purchased from Needs.com after much research into products and merchants. I used two versions of Klaire Labs probiotics and also Nature's WayProbiotic Pearls - Acidophilus. The two Klaire varieties (Vital-10 and also Vital-Immune Biotic) gave me coverage of multiple strains, and they're "pharmaceutical grade." They do give you a better price if you call in--the price they can display on the website is limited by an agreement with the manufacturer. The pearls are supposed to be resistant to breaking down until they've passed through your stomach and reached your intestines (the better not to have been destroyed by stomach acid before arriving where you do need them). Yes, you must be very careful about C-diff, as you know, so a variety of probiotic strains can be helpful. Also, be sure to take them at least six hours before/after your antibiotics, or your antibiotics will negate the probiotic effects. Also, you cannot get an optimal level of probiotics from yogurt, so supplements are smart during and for a little while after the ABX therapy. Feel better!

I mix 1 container Activia yogurt with a half cup of whole milk yogurt. That does its magic for me! :). Feel better soon.

I agree with Silkian, the Activia yogurt is great. I like adding Chia Seeds to my yogurt to aid with good gut bacteria.

Thanks aamaddux, I need something a tad stronger than Activia. It works for some, but not for me. I used to eat it daily. As far as chia. I've been eating a tablespoon a day for at least five years. It is cheaper to purchase now than when I started.

Hope you’re feeling better? 🙏
