I must say in my fitness journey I have learnt alot of lessons about myself that can be related to anything really.

Lesson number 1: don't limit yourself
for a long while when I started out in crossfit I detested weight training, I only ever wanted to do the cardio and calisthenic elements. So I would limit myself never lifting heavier, cherry picking workouts that left me only doing weight training if I was absolutely forced to by the rest of the workout being so good.

Then one day I caught myself because despite my selective pickings I was still getting stronger and I could start doing things I had never dreamed of doing before like lifting furniture and bringing the 25kg dog food inside instead of having to ask my partner for help every time the going got heavy.

The problem was though is in being selective and limiting myself I wasn't allowing myself to learn and master the proper technic for lifting from the classes specifically designed around the weight lifting exercises.

And thus the injuries started to set in, it started with my back seizing my shoulder dislocating then it was the ligments in my foot then it was my ankle.

at that point I told myself to cut the crap and face reality I wasn't applying myself properly, I had missed the entire point in my aim to do what I wanted.

So you know what I did, I refocused and made a concerted effort to try harder to learn and absorb instead of just shutting it out and saying it's not for me.

and you wouldn't believe the progress I made in a short space of time before I knew it I have doubled the weight I was originally lifting and I am injury free.

But if I hadn't limited myself originally I could have saved myself alot of pain.

Lesson 2: if you haven't passed out yet and you have breath in your lungs then you can do it.

there have been many instances where I have been worked to the point of throwing up and then told to do another round.

and you know what I did it, because it was only one more round!

there is a place in every person no matter who they are that can give a bit more, but we as a society have gotten so used to being comfortable that we rarely tap that resource.

but when we do we discover ourselves in a whole different light, because when you are that tired and uncomfortable suddenly nothing you do is about anything else except you and yourself you are completely internalized and for once instead of working against yourself you work for yourself.

Lesson 3: Just because your muscles are sore doesn't mean you can't get back in the saddle.

Weirdly enough I have discovered the only way to cure truly stiff muscles is to work out again the next day, I know this may sound counter productive but trust me it works.

Get those lactic juices going or suffer the consequences for a week afterwards.

Love this!! It’s so true what you said about us not pushing ourselves enough because we have gotten comfortable - I went for an hour hot yoga class this morning and it was tough - but afterwards I still felt like I could exercise more. Happened to mention it to my mom and she said ‘Are you crazy?’ - implying I’d exercised enough. The thing is - my body felt great, I was motivated to work out some more, but the thought of ‘overdoing’ it made me nervous. But I think it’s like you said - if you still have breath in your lungs and you haven’t passed out yet - you still have more in you to give!! Here’s to being fit and happily determined! 🤩

Great post. People think I am crazy for working out or playing sports after I get off work. I usually hear, "I couldn't do that. I'm too tired at the end of the day." I always think: No, you could. You just don't want to.

Thanks. I've started to do some workouts recently. And I find your post here very informative and helpful. I'll persist and stop finding excuses for my laziness. Again I'm really thankful for your post here.

I am so happy you guys took something from this. because I was sitting today and thinking about the journey and how much you pick up along the way if you are just open to it. I also used to be a person who was scared of over doing it. But then I looked at the people who are really good at what they do, they are putting 6 to 7 days of training in somethings up to three times a day and lets face it to start off they were just like us the only difference is they found what they loved and they threw themselves head over heels into it. Now I'm not saying everyone can have that level of dedication because we have to be realistic plus we have lives but we can take something from it. You have to learn your personal limits once you cut the crap and face yourself and learning to surprise yourself and learn yourself is a beautiful journey treasure it.
