Mrs Rancor's Journal, 31 January 2018

I am just at my wits end. I have recently become vegetarian and I am actually attempting to eventually transition to full on vegan. I am eating much fewer calories than I was eating before. I have struggled with my weight fluctuating my whole adult life. I have always been overweight since I was in 3rd grade and this time I am losing nothing. How can I not be.losing when I am definitely staying way under my caloric intake that I was eating prior to now? I am struggling so much and it is making me sad and a little depressed. I am not eating vegan/vegetarian just simply to lose weight but because I have learned about a lot of reasons why meat could be causing me some health issues but I assumed that in going vegetarian and eating so much healthier than I was that the weight would start coming off... any ideas?

Are you eating a lot of carbohydrates. What does a typical day look like.

Are you eating enough calories? Sometimes eating too little can slow down metabolism? It might just take some time for your body to adjust. A change like that can be stressful on your body.

Are you staying hydrated with enough water is the other big question? Your body won’t let you get rid of anything if you are dehydrated at all in its opinion. 64 oz of water. Non caffeine and non carbonated per day at minimum.

I was impatient too in the beginning of my weight loss, but learned that the weight loss expectations doesn't control you or your moods or you will lose your persistent and give up. It doesn't happen as quick as we want you've already lost 3 lbs in a week that is a huge accomplishmnt already

It might also be insulin levels - you might need to do something like eating all food in 8 hrs and fast for 16- this is something that was key for me and which I just learned - I eat from 11-7 and then that’s it. You also might need a better balance of fewer carbs and more fat- hard as a veggie I know... hang on there and maybe find a functional medicine endocrinologist?

Fewer carbs, higher fats, plenty of calories, lotsa water, all very important!

when you are doing vegetarian/vegan it is hard to avoid lots of carb-full food, and carbs are BAD for weigh loss:( so try to have more healthy fats and more vegetables and limit the grains and other sugars including fruit as much as possible. That should help.

Look into intermittent fasting. It's a very powerful tool. Dr Jung on YouTube is super knowledgeable! And make sure you're actually not going too low on calories

If you’re eating too low amount of calories your body won’t lose anything but water weight and still hold onto body fat, worse case scenario it’ll force muscle to be lost in order to maintain and/or increase body fat. Increase calories until you see steady weekly loss

I appreciate everyone's comments. I am doing a good job keeping hydrated for the most part. When I am at work through the week, this tends to be easier b/c I have it sitting right on my desk. Throughout the week, I am taking in about 64-80 oz of water (daily minimum)... However, I have seen in what I am eating that my carb intake definitely outweighs my protein intake by far but on a vegetarian/vegan diet, it is hard to get protein w/out the carbs... I get most of my protein from legumes which tend to be high in carbs. When I would diet before, I would eat lots of meat and low carb veggies so not having that protein to burn the fat is what I think may be hurting me. On the upside, the low carb high protein diets seemed to really yo-yo my weight. I am hoping that losing it really slowly will help me keep it off.

Walking up stairs at a pace that is comfortable for you with intermittent short bursts/speed ups for 5 mins once or twice a week will help burn fat and lose weight faster
