mskestrela's Journal, 11 July 2017

Happy Tuesday evening, buddies and followers.
My body has come up with an interesting new way of telling me I'm dehydrated. I shake, and get anxiety. Sometimes my hands shake so badly that I can't put on earrings. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out what the cause was. Now, I'm making sure to drink at least one (sugar-free) electrolyte sports drink a day, in addition to being hyper-conscious about drinking water. Especially at work.
As I close in on maintenance, I'm experimenting with higher carbs, as mentioned in earlier journals. One thing that is painfully obvious is that starchy carbs love company. Right now, I'm trying alternating days of very low (under 20 g) carb, with a higher (Under 100 g). Not really a problem, with weight staying within a +/- 2 lb range. But the cravings caused by the higher days are a be-yotch on the lower days!
I'm still doing OMAD on both days, and it certainly makes it a challenge. However, the day after a higher carb day, I have noticed that I feel stronger, more alert and less tired. I'll stick with this until I have enough data to decide if it's a good path. If it's not, I may go to a modified 5-2 plan, with only 2 days a week of higher carbs.
I love experimenting!
Wishing you all a great rest of the week,
~Kes

Once again -- something we have in common: The longer I am on this routine, the more sensitive I have become to dehydration AND to low blood sugar. The dehydration is very problematic because in combination with the high-oxylate diet that results from eating low FODMAP, it promotes kidney stones. But like you, I get shaky and anxious. And when I haven't had enough protein, or just haven't eaten enough calories, I get shaky and irritable as in want to bite someone. So now I am trying to be very conscious of drinking enough and making sure that if my calorie and protein count for a meal is too low, that I plan for a high-protein snack. It's tricky, but I'm kind of amazed at how more sensitive my body is, or maybe it just my awareness of subtle and not-so-subtle changes.

@Hermiones Mom, yes! I've definitely noticed a lot of muscle loss. A lot of that is due to my mostly sedentary lifestyle. My mind mostly overrules my body. But my body makes its own demands, and I'm paying attention these days. I wish you health, my friend.

Kes, very interesting observations...think the one thing a lot of us are learning is how our individual bodies respond and what really makes them work. Interesting in that losses some times occur after a higher carb day....I try to stay at about 5-7 carbs net and when I do indulge and hit 20, I usually see a lost. There is something about the way our body react to these large swings. As you said, it is fun to experiment. And by all means, keep yourself hydrated!!!!

Kes -- maybe you need dogs! I just heard a report on NPR that there's a study that says that people who have dogs are less sedentary and get more exercise. I walk the dogs anywhere from 30-40 minutes per day and I take my little guy -- Carson-- to agility class 2-3x per week. That provides a baseline of exercise for me, because I sit in front of a computer screen most of the day. Suprisingly, I've maintained muscle tone, although I have a lot of loose skin these days because that's what happens when older women lose weight! Have a good rest of the week. I'll be vacationing.

Keep us posted Kes. My current goal weight should be reached within 6 weeks and I need to start planning out the next goal weight. I'm really interested in how your experimenting will unfold. Great job.
