DairyKing's Journal, 31 December 2011

Well, I ran the "Race your Ice Off" 5K run today. I am proud to say that I 'ran' the whole race - although if you were a fast walker, you probably would have passed me at times. They said the course was relatively flat. Relative to what? I don't remember running anything that wasn't going down or going up. It was by sheer will power that I finished the race. I didn't have anything left. But I did it. I just kept telling myself that, "If I stop and walk, I am going to be forever disappointed with myself; I can do this." It was actually warm for this time of year, but it was around 42F, overcast and very windy. It felt very cold. I went there with the intention of running with a short sleeve shirt and shorts. I ended up running with a jacket and nylon pants, and regretting it immensely half-way through the race. My jacket was soaking wet when I got back. This running thing is nothing but a mind game. I almost always feel like quitting 5 minutes into a run, whether on a treadmill or on the road; but I rely on self-talk to get me through it, and am usually glad I did -after it's over. I envy the faster runners who do a 5K in 15 minutes and are on their second beer by the time I get back. I'm hoping that I'm waiting on them, when the other 50 pounds comes off. :)
I've been off work since last Friday, so I haven't been on the computer much. Been doing a lot of remodeling around the homestead; been afraid to look at the scales; will start afresh after the 1st of the year. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Here's wishing you a Happy New Year!

CONGRATS on your successful run!! That's such a great feeling - nice work!! Brr.. sounds like some yucky conditions - that's always hard when you start out freezing cold and then you are just sweating your face off partway through - haha.. It's totally a mind game and I envy the people that can just get in their 'zone' and just run and run forever.. I just haven't been able to do that yet, I need to be able to pace myself better! Anyway, here's to finishing out your year on a high note!!! :) Cheers, Happy New Year!!

Yay!! I did one today too! I wanted a pr, but that did not happen. My course was very hilly, but I did it and my pace was good (just not off the charts!). Running is at least 75% mental....your brain will quit long before your legs!!!

Well done, DK. Very nice. Of course, will power gets you through. I think that's as it's meant to be. And best wishes for a Happy New Year to you. I can't imagine starting it any better than that!
