Hermiones Mom's Journal, 21 November 2015

This might be a phony weight, but I couldn't resist posting it. Past couple of days my IBS has run riot with my digestion, so I'm probably a bit dehydrated, but still, weighing in at 174.2 was very encouraging. Wish I knew what I ate to kick it off. I got sick 24 hours after eating sushi, and it's the second time it's happened. I checked nori out on the FODMAP list, and it's supposed to be safe. But I realized that when I ate sashimi instead of maki, I was fine. It's only when I eat maki that I have a problem, so I guess I better stick with sashimi from here on...
174.2 lb Lost so far: 59.8 lb.    Still to go: 32.2 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Nice loss, kiddo! I made King Arthur Gluten Free Scones (mix) this morning for all of us. I swear, I felt better and more energetic and so was my mom and Micky. I think they add B vitamins to it. Whatever lit a fire under us ... I like it! LOL! Good for you for figuring out the maki made you feel funky. It could have been bad?

Mom -- I don't think there was anything wrong with the food. It's a very reputable place, and my symptoms hit 24 hours after I ate and disappeared today, which would not be typical of a food problem. Since I developed IBS, and particularly since I got control of it through the FODMAP diet, I've found that if I make a mistake, I know it 24 hours later. I'm thinking now that it's possible that nori is high in sulfites, and since I got IBS, sulfites not only give me a rash, but they also give me diarrhea. Anyway -- I'm just going to avoid nori now.

That is very interesting. You really have a handle on this and I think I haven't been listening to my body enough. Recently I made a regular white bread with my new bread maker (early Christmas present). It has a gluten free setting!! Anyway, I don't eat wheat (not often, anyway) but I had to try it and ate too much of it at dinner. My stomach was messed up the next day. I know I don't have celiac disease but I could be gluten intolerant to some extent. I don't seem to have problems with rice flour.... so far.

Mom- there's a lot of controversy about the gluten business now. And here's what my gastroenterologist and many clinical nutritionists say: There is nothing inherently unhealthy about gluten, and the gluten-free "craze" is actually potentially unhealthy because it has convinced many people to stop eating whole grains that are important to a health colon -- like whole wheat, rye, and barley. That said -- many people have trouble with wheat, rye & barley, and it is possible they have the same problems I do with digesting fructans in these grains. See the following article: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/05/22/314287321/sensitive-to-gluten-a-carb-in-wheat-may-be-the-real-culprit
