Sandy701's Journal, 29 July 2011

We'll be headed out tonight to a birthday dinner for someone who works with DH. Initially, the plan is to go to a very popular seafood restaurant. The only potential glitch is that the place doesn't take reservations and the wait, esp. on a Friday, could be rather long.

Plan B, if the wait is long is to go to TGIFriday's. I looked up their menu online - as I did for the the seafood place - and was surprised to see an "Atkins Approved Menu" that listed 6 items (online, anyway).

But, just wait a minute....When I looked up these items on the TGIF website for nutrition info, I found that the Tuscan Spinach Dip was a whopping 1080 calories, 85 carbs and 8 fiber!!! Maybe a larger person in Maintenance could handle that, but not me! And, the Shrimp Key West comes in at 750 calories, 29 carbs, and 7 fiber. Not as bad, certainly, but still not exactly in the range I'm looking for.

The other 4 items that were "Atkins Approved" did not appear on the TGIF website's nutritional grid.

Yikes. Looks like it will be the Grilled Chicken Cobb salad for me(550 calories, 13 carbs, 7 fiber PLUS whatever's in the dressing of choice) if our party ends up there. The fiber and carbs may be influenced by any croutons - which I would not eat. Sure, some of the steak dishes would be just fine, but DH and I can do some outstanding steaks at home that I would put up against any restaurant offerings. We can do salads too, but at least I wouldn't be paying quite as high a high price for those.

Let's hope we can get to the seafood place. One of their specials tonight is swordfish with bacon, spinach and gorgonzola cheese. No nutritional info given, but I'd be willing to go for it!

Sandy - By the time you read this you will probably be gone. Hope you had a good time. For me, eating out is getting less and less enjoyable.

Was 98 in the shade when I got home today - Of course, that would be normal for you.

I always order steak now. My husband does not like beef except hamburgers, so it is a treat for me! I am always upset though when I ask if there is any sugar in the marinade, (for steak tips) most of the time they are not sure. What about diabetics? Don't they have to know that info? That includes seafood. Restaurants think everything needs some sort of sweetner in sauces and marinandes. What is up with that?

Well Buffy, 98 is a tad high for us, but by the middle of next week, we should be solidly 95 or higher. 98 in the shade might just make me melt!

Lisa, it really is sad that it seems our entire country's food service has to keep adding sweeteners and sugar to so many things that really don't need it at all! So frustrating! As for tonight, it turns out our restaurant plans changed yet again! At the last minute, before everyone left work, reservations were made (yay!) at a newer place fairly close to our home....a place with seafood and a Caribbean flair! Although DH got blackened fresh fish of the day, I opted for prime rib because I rarely get the chance to get it. Mixed veggies, as well as asparagus, rounded out my meal. Although the prime rib was a "small" at 12 oz., I just immediately cut it in half and I now have an excellent leftover for tomorrow. Very good food, excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere - we'll definitely return!!
