jsfantome's Journal, 30 March 2011

Wow, have I been busy! My youngest son is a Jr in High School, and I have been helping him with some of the COLLEGE SEARCH process...oh my! When it's all said and done...who knows how we will ever pay for this! (it's crazy how outrageous schools cost now!!!)

Life in the Low Carb Lane... running smoothly.

Have another massive housecleaning project on tap today. (yesterday, I did my bedroom from top to bottom, sideways, and every nook and crany inbetween!!!) Today, it's on to the Entrance, Din Rm, Living Room - and spring cleaning for all 3 !!!

I am really hopeful that by the end of the weekend... the INSIDE portion of my house will have had a bath! (so to speak!)

Much Love

School up here is very expensive too (well imo). Prolly nothing like what you are seeing but I average 5K a year in tuition and that is excluding books and rent because I rent off campus. I don't know how it works down in the states beign Canadian but is there a chance you can apply for scholarships or anything like that? As for the house... when you are done please come finish mine ;)

There are many options out there. States schools are the cheapest. Depending where you live, there are many great state colleges. There is lot's of financial aid and loans. There is also the option of going to community college for two years and then going to a college of choice. I took out loans, received grants, and worked two jobs to put myself through. It can be done. Talk to lot's of people and google to find out about many different options. Good luck!

thanks for the tips...and the support! we'll get thru this, but it's just a LOT of work! My son is very bright, and academically looking to try to receive MERIT based scholarships and /or go to top schools that will give him the total pkg !!! (not bragging...but he is in the top 1% of the country on his testing scores.) He is a fun-loving, compassionate, and PASSIONATE Christian young-man! He loves the Math & Sciences and wants a career in Engineering, that he can then couple with Missions Work and benefit others/communities in his efforts to be a Missionary. One day he supposes he will settle down w/ a wife and children, and it would be great to have the 'degree' out of the way so he can at least make a decent living to support them. (at least that is what he says now... and for any teenager... just wait 5 min's and he'll change his mind!) :)))) Much Love.

Paula, I'm 2nd in line right behind Pixie to have you clean my house too. As for your son, you must be so proud! But I would imagine that puts a bit of added pressure on you to help him make such a big choice. and there are so many partial scholarships out there, you could have a second career just applying for them all. Best of luck to him, and you, as you embark on this new phase of preparing to send him out in the world.

Ummmm....I would be more than happy to give you my address - just in case you are overcome with boredom when you finish up at your house. ☺ And, you can let your son know that there is this lovely young lady coming up that will be ready to meet him by the time he graduates college...my granddaughter will be 18 by then! Your son sounds like the young man every mother/grandmother wishes for their daughters/granddaughters!! ☺ ☺ Have a wonderful day!!!

Um... Paula... the top 1%... brag lady brag... seriously I would lol. Sounds like your son has things planned out, which is better than I am doing thats for sure I am still not 100% sure what I want to do lol. Scholarships are great, I have a loan from the government as well. I am sure it will all work out but you are right, it is a LOT of work.

I'm a financial aid counselor at a college and I can definitely vouch for that feeling. Every day I meet with parents and discuss this stuff. If kids don't go to state schools it can get pretty ridiculous and even state schools are getting more and more expensive.

Yikes, Jr High and college searching? boy times have changed. I know it is really competitive but such a burden on our youth so early on is sad. Hope your son is gauging his ed goals on a particular passion (engineering?), if not, I would lean toward a community college or state school and get the pre reqs under his belt and hopefully after 2 years he will have a solidified focus on his goals (if it is still engineering) and can then transfer those credits to a university to finish up. This is a great option if you have financial limitations. I did it this way, changed my major 3x before I really landed on what I was really interested in. I also lived at home, worked and still went to school full time until I went away my last 2 years. My parents footed the bill and this was a great compromise that we were all happy with. Talking everything out and including your son at the right time will help you come to solutions that are best for your family.

Babs - he's a JR in High School... not in Jr. High... he's in 11th grade. And Yes, Engineering IS his PASSION (academically speaking!) Loves the challenge of it all. His first choice schools would be to go to MIT, CalTech, or a couple others (all ranked in the top 10 Engineering Schools in the country.) BUT... the cost of these schools are waaaaayyyy out of our reach. He's always known that his best shot at a GOOD SCHOOL is be at the top! And he's just so bright! But so are all of the TOP students that will be applying to these schools. He has never compromised his values though... and is just as interested in a Christian school,... like Baylor Univ or Liberty or Taylor ... which all have high academic reputations. I am just hopeful he will get at least 50-75% reductions based on his SAT's/GPA/scores, etc. He knows that if he doesn't get the $$$$ pkgs offered by a MIT, or CalTech type of school...he's not going there. $50K a year! NO. And he doesn't want that either. But if they will break that down to $10K a year...well, it becomes just as do-able as any State College here in MA. See what I mean... it's a lot to look at!

Paula, searching for a suitable college and then figuring out how to pay for it, can be exhausting. Good luck!! Have a great week, enjoy your cleaning, and when you are done will you kindly come to Missouri? I am in dire need of an energtic person to help with mine!

Liberty Liberty Liberty Liberty Liberty -- look no further.... = ) It truly is the most exciting university -- with loads of positive peer pressure and an environment which will anchor his faith to a solid foundation and not try to bring its demise, like secular universities. I am proud to say I am a product of LU! Attending that school gave me some of the most incredible experiences and education imaginable! = )

Wow! I have a lot of cleaning to do... and I thought I was done for the day :) Did manage to get thru the Liv Rm and Entrance, but not quite finishing in the Din Rm yet. Will have to wait til tomorrow. OH, and the upstairs Bathroom is tomorrow... That will be a LONG day for sure! Nobody else cleans around here...just me :) As for the kiddo...thanks Evie...great recommendation on Liberty...he is looking at their website right now. Will discuss at dinner, as we may be in the VA area during the week between Palm Sunday and Easter...family vacation... and we are going to DC to see some sights. Perhaps a campus visit will be in order!!! :))) I'll let you know. Thank you so much for your PM - lots of great info! Much Love.

js Brooke may be a great source. I have the most loving, intelligent, frugal daughter. She saved us a lot of money on books and will graduate from U.C. Davis this June! I thought the same but with some grant money and the student loan process it was possible and not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Best wishes and you must be very proud that he is heading off to higher education when he graduates H.S. TOWANDA!!!!!!
