I just visited my finance's stepfather in the hospital last night. He had a minor heart attack. This man is an athlete with amazing BP and runs for cardio. He is in his 70's. I started thinking about my life and how many years of poor eating choices I have made. My BP is already creeping up, my LDLs are too high. I have been overweight most of my life. It's hard to make a lifestyle change around everyone who wants to try your resolve. It's also difficult because I live with someone who struggles with making healthy food choices even more than myself. We tend to exacerbate each others eating disorders. Both Matt and myself are so much more likely to be in his place a LOT sooner. It really gave me back the drive I needed to give this another real go.

Sorry to hear about your fiancé's stepfather, hope fully recovers. Maybe your fiancé will join you in this journey? That would be great, it's easier to do if you both are doing it, but if not remember that you can only have control over yourself. First and foremost do it for yourself. Best wishes to your success!

Good for you - our personal inspiration comes from so many different places but we all need something to get us going or keep us going from time to time. Sorry to hear about the BF step father but think of it this way, if he wasn't a healthy athlete with good cardio, the heart attack might not have been considered minor.

Hope your step father makes a full and healthy recovery and try making healthy choices for yourself because your worth it and because you are loved.

The generation coming up behind us (the recent wrinklies) is the first generation whose life span it is said will not exceed their parents in many generations. That's a pretty sad situation. The only things it can be is a far more sedentary lifestyle and the bill of good we've been sold as what encompasses healthy foods. I believe the majority of the problem is highly processed complex carbs. I recently saw where they compiled studies over a period of years taking into account 350,000 who were either eating saturated fats, or those who were avoiding saturated fats. The results? No difference for heart attack or stroke between the two groups. Study up and make the change. Start by getting the calories under control. It's worth the trouble to understand it all.
