madaboutmoose's Journal, 25 February 2009

I was just looking at the MSN home page and there is an article ... how to look great in plus size clothing sizes 12 and up. Size 12??? Is that now considered "plus size clothing"???? Unbelievable. I guess it all depends on a woman's height and body build but at 5'10" and my build size 12 is downright skinny for me!! I am continually astounded by how the media bombards us with body image messages. I am speechless.

Are you friggin' serious? 12? I thought 14/16 was the threshhold for "plus sizes." I would kill to fit in my size 12 pants. Ok, maybe not kill, but I would have a celebration if I could fit into them again. I might kill to fit into my size 10 jeans. :P

wow that is weird that it's considered plus size.. but i would rather be a 12 then a 22.. i'll take that!

I thought a size 14/16 was the beginning of plus size too! Layne Bryant, Catherine's, and other plus size specialty stores carry 14/16 and up. I know how you feel, though! My friend [who is looking into being a plus size model] is a size 8! and they are considering her a plus size!?!? I WANT to be a size 8, and I am 5'9 so that would be very fit/firm for me, by my standards... dont you ladies agree? we're not all ideally a size 4/6 lol

LOL, I don't even dream about being a 4/6 because I come from large genes and well, to be a 4/6 would be a skeleton for me. 8 would be cool though, eventually. Oh, and your friend who is looking into being a plus size model at size 8, I want to think she is a good person, but isn't that just reinforcing the media bias if she does that?

I think it is just our society and its idea of "ideal". After all, look at that whole broo ha ha about Jessica Simpson getting "fat." The girl is a freakin size 8 for goodness sakes and they act like she weighs 800 pounds with all the hoopla. It is insane what our society does and how it sees people.

haha i liked dawn's comment. Jessica is a size 8, but on a 5'3 frame, and she doesnt even look fat! so imagine a size 8 on someone tall. oh! and munestar, my friend and I have talked about that. She was originally looking into doing clothing shots/ amateur modeling, but she was kinda 'forced' into 'plus size' modeling because she is a size 8! So now she is actually going into plus size modeling. [its sorta because she is a size 8 and i guess the industry figures thats where she belongs?] It was heart breaking for her to be labeled as "plus size", but we dont consider her fat/overweight/big at all. She is a normal sized, healthy girl.

I think I might have been a size 4/6 when I was 4 or 6 years old ... LOL!!!! Oh my gosh ... I thought it was bad to consider size 12 plus size now I hear someone who wears a size 8 is being considered for plus size modeling! It seems like the media just fuels bad body image messages for women. UGH!! I like fit athletic women and how they look ... I also enjoy seeing curves and softness in women ... why can't we all just get along and enjoy varieties in beauty?
