Actually had to top-up yesterday's calorie intake in the night. Wasn't hungry when I went to bed at 11pm, but woke up at 3am with a nagging headache and every muscle aching. Tried to go back to sleep for an hour and drinking water didn't seem to help. So I chowed down on a big fat Promax bar and, almost instantly, the headache went and the muscles felt fine. I don't know why I was surprised. Clearly, my body needed more than I thought but it was weird how immediately everything felt better. Before this, it had been an especially gruelling day. After my morning run, I spent 7 incredibly tedious hours jet-washing the ancient paint and rust off our front railings. Such is the glamour of my life just now, and I volunteer myself for doing these things, simply because they have to be done. I should point out that the railings are original fixtures, installed when the house was built in 1893 and clearly never stripped properly since, just paint piled on primer, piled on rust, piled on primer, piled on paint... You get the idea. Anyway, between humphing hugely heavy hoses and equipment about, brush-cutting through the jungle of trees and bushes in the way, getting soaked non-stop in the cold by the spray, and practically having to do yoga to avoid hitting the neighbours' cars or passing traffic, it was pretty taxing! Obviously I underestimated the calories burned and then there's that state you get into where you're so tired physically that you barely have the energy to eat. At any rate, it was a landmark of sorts, as one of the first times in my life that I've actually *had* to eat in the night -- apart, that is, from the miscellaneous "munchies" episodes of my misspent youth :-). And it was loooovely, sitting up in bed gnawing greedily on a big fat chocolate bar! No guilt necessary, of course, just a delicious post-midnight feast. I'm journaling about it here, just so I don't forget it.
