kmunson's Journal, 09 September 2013

My husband and I caved on Saturday and started watering the vegetable garden. Since then we have had two brief rain showers. We should have broken out the sprinkler sooner!!! Course not much rain has fallen...so we may still have to use the sprinkler too. (we were classified as being in an extreme drought).
That will mean that I have to find more time to preserve what comes out of the garden. Saturday resulted in a scrub pail full of cucumbers and 8 quarts of tomatoes picked.

Vegetable garden... I have been dreaming of this for quite some time. I would like to have trays of cilantro, cucumbers, broccoli and potatoes on my deck. Perhaps too much work for a mother of a toddler and a yorkie, however I am going to give this a try!

It truly is wonderful watching it grow and seeing what you can get from the garden. But they are also a lot of work! Can't beat the fresh veggies though! We had zucchini, cucumbers, broccoli, dill, tomatoes, butternut squash, cauliflower, sunflowers and watermelon this year in the garden. My hubby is talking about expanding the garden next year. I don't have time to deal with much more though... That is what having almost 6 acres of land does...you have so much space to plant things if you want. Cilantro and cucumbers should work well on a deck...if the cucumbers can climb on the deck. Broccoli and potatoes can grow in pots so those should be easy if you remember to water everything! That is where I would fail as a patio gardener...watering. It would all die for me because I would forget to water them.

That is very nice. Since I have limited space and time, I am going to start with cilantro and potatoes. Thanks for the information.

So what are you canning this weekend? Do you can or freeze the butter nut squash. This is one of my favorite winter veggies. I like it made into a soup, I will need to tweek my recipe, it currently calls for cream, I will give an additional chicken bullion cube and maybe some evap skim milk a try, it should be tasty and much lighter. Still too hot for a hearty soup here in Phoenix.

Squash should keep for a while in our cold storage room without having to do anything to it. That won't be ready until we get a frost I guess? We have never grown that before. We are learning as we go with that stuff. Some will go to our church for suppers that they serve there once a week. We have at least a dozen out there in the garden. I don't eat squash...so that will be my hubby's baby I guess. There should be more tomatoes out there this weekend I think. I picked nine of them last night. The grape tomatoes are crazy how many there are and how fast they get ripe. Cucumbers have slowed because of the drought. I went out last night and didn't see a lot of them. Apples may be my target this weekend. I have a tree full of the things. I can apples for pies some times. I think that these are haraldson apples. They are good in pies.
