So, here's where we are at.... Hubby is on a 'soft foods' diet, and progressing. Still taking two antibiotics. Dr recommended refilling and taking them with us ... just in case.

Started hubby on a probiotic about 5 days ago. He wants to start to transition to a higher fiber way of eating w/ a Metamucil caplet and the probiotic... by the weekend... to see how he tolerates all this.

Anyone have any experience w/ all of this kind of stuff?

He's been good about drinking lots of water all day - but I am nervous about moving him back into a high fiber way of eating, although everything I read suggests that is best for him. (eventually)

What do you think?

I use Garden of Life probiotics for women 50 & wiser. I swear by them. I would never do the Metamucil thing. I'd do spinach or green juice at least 3 times a week. Spinach, chia seeds and oatmeal are wicked good fiber and great laxatives.

Hi Paula, you told me once you were grateful for me being truthful, so on that note I had a thought, I was worried about your trip, so thought I should share the thought. Travel insurance. I know USA is different than Canada but our insurance companies won't pay travel insurance or even given you travel insurance, if you are out of hospital that short a time. I would hate to see him have a relapse while out of the country, and you have no travel insurance. Sorry to be a downer Paula, you may already have all this figured out but would kick myself if I didn't mentioned this to you.

No recommendations, just good wishes. What does the doctor recommend? Products? Transitioning???

I have had some issues where I had to be on soft diet with lots of fiber because my gut shut down. My doctor told me to take probiotics as well as a Citrucel caplet daily... he said it was more gentle on the gut than Metamucil. Walmart's brand works well and is a LOT cheaper...just check that it is the Citricel type as equate has several different fiber therapys. I hope he will get better soon.

don't do the Metamucil thing...I agree with Helewis chia seeds, Dr. Oz says to take 2tsp. in water every day 1/2 hour before lunch and dinner
