Johanne's Journal, 15 October 2010

I just found out last night that blue cheese, among others, may not be gluten free. Some brands may have the mold started with wheat bread. Who knew? No wonder I used to get so ill eating salads. That was my favorite salad dressing and topping. That, with the croutons, would be more than enough. You have to read the labels to see what the mold starter was.

I never knew that. It might explain some acid reflux I got. I don't get the same reaction from Danish bleu cheese. Maybe they make it differently.

Probably. Not everyone makes it with bread mold as starter, just the cheaper brands. You can bet they don't serve the more expensive brands at the restaurants I can occasionally afford. LOL. Apparently, it should be listed on the label.

I got sick from some salad dressing two weeks ago - had a migraine for two days and the dressing was the only thing I had eaten that was out of the ordinary. There was no label I could check since it was at a school function. Ugh, so much to look out for!

If it was a salad bar, in some restaurants, they also soak the greens in some kind of preservative so that it won't wilt while sitting out. I'm also sensitive to that, so it might not have been the salad dressing that gave you the headache. I get intestinal stuff with bleu cheese, but the greens themselves can make me really sick even with a different dressing.

Never mind. LOL. I just read "school function."

Thank goodness, we are just too poor to eat out! lol Man the things taht they put into or onto our food these days. My sister had a severe anaphalctic reaction to bagged salad from the grocer. The doctors suspected it was the preservatives they put on the greens to keep them fresh while on the shelf! Wow, scary stuff!

I eally have to watch DH as he has developed some very scary allergies, and has nearly died 4 times in the last 2 years. I carry an epi-pen EVERYWHERE and he is very, very careful about what he eats. Have had to use the epi-pen on him twice now. Scared me nearly half to death! The lst time he had not eaten anything for over 12 hours, so they aren't sure what the heck is going on!

Oh Steph! That's SCARY! So far I've only had sick reactions . . . migraines and stomach/intestinal stuff. I've never had an actual "allergic" reaction. I AM severely anemic and have had to have multiple transfusions. I now believe that's due to gluten intolerance. But, except for one time, when my CBC hit 4.6, it's never been life threatening. Food allergies, on the other hand, as in your DH, can, as you obviously know all to well, be deadly. I will be praying for you both.
