Fritzy 22's Journal, 12 March 2020

Maybe today will be the day I can get the focus back on my diet and start losing weight. But maybe not. I do better when I have a "starting" day - often a Monday or the 1st of the month or year. It gives me some time to get "ready".
I've been needing to have the deck railing replaced for about a year now. Last year I had a carpenter and a handyman both come out and tell me they could do the work and then never heard from them again. Earlier this week I called a "retired" contractor who recently moved to the community and says he can do just about anything. He came over and scared me to death about the deck - which I had installed when I bought this house in 2011. He walked underneath it and gave me the impression that whoever installed the deck did a lousy job and there were so many problems, not just the deck rail but the underneath of the deck, the frame of it. I live on a hill. Said if it was his deck he'd probably tear it out and just start over. Told me it would be costly, looking at at least $15k. Thanked him for the information and started to panic when he left. I am doing some home improvements but a new deck was not on my list. New deck railing is at the top. Don't want to increase my home equity line and it looked like I'd need to use my fund I've been saving for a new car. Then I went on Nextdoor to look for recommendations in my neighborhood and to the website to check out contractors and businesses in California. Couldn't find a license for the first guy (who was so impatient and grouchy I wouldn't have hired him anyway). Finally called a contractor, after verifying he is licensed, bonded and has workman's comp for his employers. He had all positive reviews on Nextdoor. I actually tried to call him when I was thinking of remodeling the kitchen. Anyway, he came out yesterday and told me the underneath of the deck is fine, built to code. He can replace the railing and even find the decking I had put in to get an extra board or two. He did confirm what grouchy guy said, that the steps up to the deck (just 2 steps) should have been placed on concrete, not just the dirt. He said to be up to code there should be a 3 foot area of concrete at the foot of the stairs. He said no problem to do the work, his crew will be getting busy with lots of summer work but this will take just a day or two and he'll send me the cost/bid.

So now maybe I will still be able to get a new car at some point. I also have someone who is going to paint my kitchen cabinets starting in about 10 days. After getting all new appliances I would like the kitchen somewhat updated. Will look for quartz or granite countertops as well.

Had lunch with a friend who is a mortgage broker. She is moving to a new company but still working from home. She said the owner is looking for help and gave me his card in case I want to go back to work. I have many years experience in mortgage lending, mostly underwriting. I also have many years of being retired, since 2011, so not sure how quickly I could learn. But I'll call and see.

Allergies are really bad. I probably make people nervous when I cough and sneeze. It's allergies, not the coronavirus! Still no cases of coronavirus in my county - so far. Read an article that it's probably safer to go to the gym if worried about coronavirus than church. People are usually a few feet away while working out and everyone wipes down all the machines after use. But I'm still wondering about it. There are lots of elderly - even older than my 64 years - at the gym. Although none of them seem frail or sickly. Probably more risk in the waiting room of the allergist when I am waiting to get a shot. So many things to think about and worry about. But that's something I do well!

Finally got the referral from my doctor to the GI specialist so I can talk to him about my gallbladder and also the feeling I have that there is a lump in my throat that the allergist says is probably from acid reflux but a good idea to see the specialist about that as well. The appointment is in 2 months.

Give it all you got Fritzy. The first battle is usually the mind. Be determined. 💪🏻👍🏻

Fritzy, for the lump in your throat: I had that for years, I have occasional acid reflux, but taking antacids didn't help the feeling of fullness in my lower throat. I had an ultrasound of my thyroid, they found benign nodules. So get that checked out, too. I started taking Selenium (200 mcg) plus Vit. D, 10000 iu daily, and the feeling of fullness is gone.

You can get started again! Just takes determination! Thanks for posting this. We need to relevel our porch stairs and we’re considering putting in a sidewalk. Now I know to place the concrete under the stairs. I didn’t even think of that! My allergies are on a rampage for the last 6 weeks or so with the weather going back and forth and all the trees blooming. I too worried about the gym until I started thinking of all the other places I go. Walmart alone is a breeding place for germs. Then the drs offices, school etc. I just wash and use germx.

That’s my problem too! I do really well then I fall off. I have a hard time finding a starting point.

Good luck on your projects!! You have it in you.... No virus cases here either yet. I am still doing all the normal things but sure thinking about it.

I can relate with the allergies.. It is starting early for me this season and it has been much worse than normal already. I keep getting dirty looks at work lol As for the Gallbladder... From now until you see your GI Doc document all that you eat and not when you have symptoms. This will help to identify if your Gallbladder needs to be removed or not. I had no major Gallstones, some small ones but not significant to cause my symptoms, however I had sever symptoms after certain foods. My GI expedited my OR date do to that. I hope you get well soon and get back on track!

Well, I am inspired. Not going to have any work done on my house at all. Maybe I will put up some plants from my neighbor and also need to get my yard items into a shed but other than that, no work!

ahh I spoke too soon. One case confirmed today

Pick a day and I'll start with you. I've decided that if I am going to be housebound at some point, I will take that low cal approach for a week or two. Walking dogs does not count, that is self-preservation for me.

SO much going on - change one thing a day and it will add up. For example, "today I will increase my water", then the next day do water and add something like "today I will walk around the block in my neighborhood" - by the end of a week , you will be back on it!

I went back to see when I actually started what I called my "Healthy Eating Plan". It was a Monday, but it felt like a random decision at the time. It wasn't random that I was planning a Beach trip a month out 😐 Today is Thursday. I think that gives you ample time to make Sunday or Monday your new start date 😊 I was happy to see you got a second opinion on your deck. I had a funny feeling the retired guy may have been trying to drum up some business. Spiffing up your kitchen may make you want to spend more time in there preparing healthy meals. Then you can go sit out on your deck & enjoy eating them after the weather is warm.

Thanks Maine Coon! I can usually start over when there isn't anything bad to eat in the house. Still have 2 boxes of pop tarts to tempt me! But at least I won't eat 20 pop tarts in one day! The allergies are really bad today. Was going to get a shot today, but didn't feel well at all in the morning so I stayed home. Wifey - I know it's my mind. Once I get committed you could put a hot fudge sundae in front of me and it wouldn't temp me. Not quite there yet. Gz9gjg - sometimes I can feel the lump, sometimes not so much. But it is pretty much always there. I've got a nasal spray and another prescription my doctor and the allergist say should help. Peeper - I tend to be a worrier and I'm watching too much news. Not sure if I have an "underlying condition". Thinking really bad allergies plus being at least 40 pounds overweight could make getting sick a problem for me. Arya - I'll start logging my food again. I think I know what causes the gallstone attacks. It's always after eating high fat, normally animal fat and usually eating too much. One doctor told me not to eat enough to feel full. Haven't had any problems for about a month now. Abba - you're lucky if you don't have anything you need to do in your new home! My previous house I bought brand new. But this one was a foreclosure and about 25 years old. I've put on a new roof, new deck, got all new window coverings, new floors, new A/C and furnace AND water heater. All new kitchen appliances. So much work and now after 9 years I need to have some things done over! Lildunn - not sure what causes me to lose my motivation. I do best when I just don't give in to any cravings. Liv - so far there are no confirmed cases in my county. I just read they've tested 10 people and 9 are negative. But I'm sure it's just a matter of time since I don't live on an island! Katsolo - I think I'll try to start on Sunday. I think. Thanks HCB - good ideas! Tatauu - only one case in your whole state? Not bad. Isyss - you don't have to read my journal - just scroll on by. Sherry - I usually get at least 2 bids when doing something big. It's a shame about the grouchy man, I have lots of little things that need to be done, but don't want to deal with him. Now I got a bid on painting the exterior of my house. About twice what I expected (and half of what grouchy man said it should cost). I was going to get 2 or 3 bids. The painter I called is the husband of a lady that used to come feed my cats when I'd go on vacation and my realtor recommends him a lot. So I thought I'd have him give me a bid and then call the painter who painted my friends house - looks really good. Turns out to be the same guy. Well thanks everyone - sorry for the rambling journal but my mind had so much going on in it today!

I like starting on Mondays or 1sts, too. That's not exactly how this recent weight loss came along but it's still what I like to do. I hope you get back to it soon! We are doing home repairs, too. Windows, gutters, misc.. It adds up, that's for sure!

Fritzy, I just took a challenge to swim 30 minutes every day for thirty days to see what happens. I just can’t do Tuesdays due to a finite number of hours in the day, but I’m shooting to hit as many as I can between now and April 9th. Gotta walk dogs and work, too. Will be fun to see how many I can do. You can start Sunday, I should still be going. Oh yeah, thunder and lightning is a no go for me. I already have curly hair. I will have to do something else those days.

Just reading about that first carpenter made my blood pressure spike. Good on you for the second opinion.

DP- the best I ever did was starting on January 1st. Was totally prepared and even made weight charts and measurements. I even bought jeans one size smaller each time I was able to get into a smaller size pair of jeans. That's back when there was Spiegal's catalogue. I had ordered a pair of jeans that I thought would fit. It was way too tight, but once they fit I ordered the next size smaller. Went from size 14 to 6 during that time. I've been doing home improvement/repairs ever since I bought the house. Did several new windows and lots of screens and screen doors. A little bit at a time and it's still expensive! Katsolo - good luck with the swimming. I know that is good exercise, but I would NEVER be seen in public in a bathing suit. Right now I can't go out and walk because of allergies. My hair gets really frizzy when it rains or when I go to the coast. Bella - now I need to get another bid or two on the painting. I had planned on using the guy that came out, he's in my neighborhood and highly recommended. But $7200 to paint the exterior of a 2100 square foot house? I gotta check it out.

I loved Spiegels! I was given an estimate for over $2000 for our gutters. The guy doing the windows said they were fine and he's going to clean them and put gutter covers, fix one that he said needs a new screw for $250 so that's awesome! 32 windows, after these last 13 they'll all be replaced. Had to do it in shifts...thousands... 💰💰💰. I'm excited to have them done.
