Fritzy 22's Journal, 04 March 2020

The vet's office told me months ago that Bobby should lose some weight. Didn't look like it to me, but I was told he should have a visible "waist" and I should be able to feel his ribs by lightly touching him if he was at his best weight. He was around 31-32 pounds. I've had pets who got heart problems and died too soon after becoming obese living with me. My goal was to get him under 30 pounds. About 2 months ago the vet's office called me and asked me to drop by sometime to weigh Bobby. I did and was excited that he was under 29 pounds. Still couldn't feel his ribs though. A couple days ago I took him to the groomer and then went next door to the vet and weighed him. 26.4 pounds! I was excited and so was everyone in the office. Of course Bobby got excited too. Wish I could be like Bobby sometime. Have someone just give me every day what I'm allowed to eat and withhold most of the treats. He can have all the green beans he wants.

Went to get my hair cut yesterday and stopped at Winco first, then later met a friend for lunch at Reb Robin. Didn't get a burger but the chicken wrap was probably just as bad. Didn't realize until I got home to post lunch that it had over 1100 calories! I didn't eat it all and just a few of the fries.

Best thing about the trip to Winco was finding some Clorox wipes. They've been showing on the local news that people cannot find cleaning products locally. I don't have much in my house, I have someone who cleans my house at least once a month and she uses my products as well as her own. So I did an inventory and I have lots of hand cleansers and dish soap and cleanser for the kitchen. But just a few wipes left and no kitchen and bathroom spray cleaning products. So happy with the wipes. Want a container in my car to wash off doors and the pumps at the gas stations, things like that. Cannot find the little hand sanitizing gels or other cleaners I used to like to have in my purse. Keep hearing about the coronavirus and while so far nothing is reported in my area I know it will be soon. Don't feel like I am high risk, but will ask my allergist today if having really bad allergies puts me in that category and what exactly is elderly?

CMC444 - The Winco and Red Robin are in Orangevale and Fair Oaks, California. About 65 miles away from where I live. I used to live in the area and still go there about every 10 weeks to get my hair styled and meet ex neighbors/co-workers for lunch. Love both Winco and Red Robin!

I was told elderly was retirement age so 70ish? In my mind elderly is 90+. I’m wondering if I’m at risk because of my allergies too. Have had issues going on 5 weeks now.

Rubbing alcohol in a sprayer is also good in a pinch.

My mom told me they were actually out of toilet paper, napkins and Kleenex in her stores. Unbelievable. I have a fancy* bidet added to my toilet seat, so in a pinch, we're good. It's not really fancy and you can get them at Home Depot and Amazon online for around $50*. Better for the planet because it also takes water to make toilet paper and get it to the stores. Want warm water or a heater for your tushie, you're gonna pay more.

I like in Kirkland WA and it is seriously crazy town at Costco. People are cleaning out toilet paper, bottled water, masks and other products. It is crazy that people have to be reminded to wash their hands often and not touch you face if you are out in public touching other things.

Unintended consequences....My hygienist at the dentist office told me yesterday it was becoming difficult to obtain masks & in fact another office in the area was totally out 😐 She said since they have to use masks with each patient this can become an issue. And they obtain other materials & supplies that are manufactured in China & with the workforce shut down there are strong chances things will become unavailable. My husband has always been very cognizant of maintaining our dogs' weights. We are careful with quantity of food & treats.

I too have an overweight dog. Sydney, is a blue heeler, who we adopted at 6years old. We have had her 2 years. She would be a great apt dog cuz she never wants to go out. She will go to bathroom outside but that's it. We walk her everyday but she doesn't like it. She was severely abused and has lots of issues but we love her and she definitely loves us!

I have never had a dog but have had either one cat or two at the same time the past 14 years. I found that cats can self regulate their nutritional needs and quantity eaten as long as what you feed them is appropriate and nutritionally satiating and not full of fillers that leave them hungry. i have never had an overweight cat and leave out bowls of food all day long. Pets eat when they are hungry or when they think food is scarce or that a companion pet may eat everything that is put out. I never let the bowl be empty. My vet(s) were always amazed how this worked for me and mostly for my cats health. Whenever a new cat came into the home at first they would devour the bowl but when they realized it was never empty after a few weeks they adjusted quickly. Never any fights ! How many times have you watched a documentary where wild cats like lions and tigers hunt for food and then turn vicious on each other. Dogs may be different and not adapt to having food always available.

Thanks jcmama! #1 - I hadn't planned on adopting Bobby. I had never had a puppy. My other dogs were older and adopted from rescue groups. I had an elderly dog with kidney problems so thought having a puppy would be tough to train. BUT I contacted a rescue group and told them I could foster puppies if they had any. I figured I'd have them a couple weeks and they would quickly get adopted. It didn't happen that way. I got 2 little pups and for some reason got no interest at all from their posting on Petfinder. I got attached to them but knew I couldn't keep 2 puppies. I decided once one of them got adopted I would keep the other. I posted a picture of them on nextdoor.com and got a reply within 5 minutes and Bobby's sister was adopted in my neighborhood. So I kept Bobby and he gets to see his sister at the dog park quite often. He was so easy to train and paid no attention to all the potty pads in the house for my other dog. I just love him to pieces! peeperjj - I think as long as I keep my allergies under control with the allergy shots, Zyrtec, and the nasal sprays I should be okay. Can't do any yard work though. jdeuster and Katsolo - I'm not that worried about hand sanitizers. I have plenty of soap at home and wash my hands a lot. I did ask about it at Target today and was told they have been out of hand sanitizers for awhile, that people bought them and are selling them for $100. Can't imagine spending $100, but it is amazing how people are reacting (including me). I always tend to stock up on stuff because it's a long drive to Costco or Winco. Everytime I go I buy laundry soap, Downy, toilet paper and sometimes paper towels, bleach, and cleansers. I probably have 200 rolls of tp! And maybe 30 bottles of dish soap. I used to buy 2 of them (one Dawn and another cheap one) every Winco trip. I keep one of the cheap soaps outside to use when I take litter boxes outside to scrub after emptying them. So I am good for awhile now. Dhatura, it's hard to remember not to touch the face. It's such a habit sometimes. But I am paying attention at the gym. I wash my hands for 20 seconds as soon as I enter the gym and wipe down all the equipment I use. I just keep telling myself not to touch my cheek or mouth and even my hair. Then I wash my hands before leaving. sherryeB - I went to the allergist's office this morning and they had 2 bottles of Purel on the counter. Can't find it at any store. Wonder if both bottles will still be there at the end of the day! Bobby never looked heavy to me at all. I just stopped giving him treats and that really made a difference. He eats twice a day, 1/4 cup of dry food, 1/3 can (small can) of canned food and 1/4 to 1/2 cup green beans. Nice plate full of food, but he always seems hungry. Diana - your dog is so lucky you adopted her! I can't understand how anyone can abuse a dog. I had 2 rescue dogs before Bobby. Both were older. I don't think either was ever abused, but very likely neglected. Neither one had a clue what to do when I bought them toys! They obviously had never had a toy. Bobby loves toys so much and they all are his as far as he is concerned, even cat toys. Crazycat - I've always had cats. I have 4 now and one is overweight and I knew he would be from the time I brought him home as a kitten because he could eat much more than his 2 "brothers'. I keep dry food out for the cats all the time, but they bug me and bug me when they feel it's time for their canned food which they get twice a day, when Bobby gets his. I have cat dishes on the bathroom counter, because Bobby would eat anything he could reach. And I have a gate on one bedroom where the litter boxes out to keep him out. I could not leave food out for Bobby, he would eat it all. I've had other dogs that I could leave dry food out for and they would just eat it if they got hungry enough.

Dhatura - it sounds scary in Washington. I can kinda understand why people are so worried. I wondered if Costco had headquarters there because all of their brands are "Kirkland".

Fritzy, we have 2 dogs. One is a female Schnauzer / Bichon. She would eat anything in her reach...any time of day. She gobbles her breakfast & dinner down. We also have a male Yorkie. He dines....nibbling each kernel of dry food and each bite of wet one by one. They also get a mix of dry kibble, a spoon of wet, a bitbof rice and either green beans or peas for their dinner meal. They get a few treats during the day. A favorite is chunks of watermelon. Lucy would eat any kind if fruit but Teddy is partial to melon 😊
