Fritzy 22's Journal, 04 February 2020

It's been cold the last 2 days and nights. Yesterday morning was the first time this winter that the water in the birdbath was frozen, but not solid - I punched through the ice to the water. Today it is frozen solid. I turn the heater off at night and it was 50 in the house when I got up around 5:30. The heater is on and at least 2 cats are sitting on heating vents trying to get warm!

I'm going to try to figure out how to eat a mostly plant based diet. Still want my morning hot chocolate and the skim milk gives me a head start on getting at least 35-40 grams of protein for the day. I'm a picky eater, I was one of those kids who wouldn't even try things that looked "yucky". In the past few years I've learned that I can eat broccoli - prefer it raw in salads or lightly cooked in a stir fry. But I'm okay with it. And I've learned to love brussels sprouts! I would gag if I had to eat them as a kid. While on the Daniel fast I roasted them and also used them in a stir fry. I also tried chick peas for the first time. Didn't really like them, but they were okay when I roasted them in the oven and I'm sure I'd be okay with them in soup. I never liked brown rice. But I tried it while on the fast. I added chopped onion and mushrooms to the rice and just a little bit of soy sauce and it was pretty good. Next thing I am going to try to get to "like" is oatmeal. I never liked it as a kid, but would eat it. My mom added butter and milk and sugar to it. I tried making it a few months ago. I managed to eat it, but didn't like it at all. I may see if I can figure out a recipe where I can bake it. Maybe add a little applesauce and cinnamon and chopped nuts. I am sure there are healthy recipes. So gradually, I am getting to the place where my doctor has been leading me for the past 3 or 4 years - eliminating processed foods.

Yeah it sounds like you are really experimenting. Good for you. I was fairly picky when I was a little child. I think that is normal. Children have different tastebuds than adults. Hope it warms up for you

what about homemade oil-free granola with the oats? I made some, basically baked with wheat germ, nuts, honey but you can read some recipes and adapt them. Delicious with almond milk!

try silk cashew/almond protein milk with your hot chocolate. it's nice and creamy with good protein, it's great for replacing milk. I have it with my coffee and oatmeal!

I also have a problem with oatmeal, but adding raisins, bananas and apples help. you can boil oats with the milk I mentioned and add your own stuff to it until you find out what you like. good luck with your experimenting!

Thanks Liv! I'm still a picky eater as an adult, but am more willing to try things. It took me 2 or 3 times to finally get to like brussels sprouts but now it is probably my favorite vegetable if cooked the way I like it! Thanks Abba - never thought of making granola. I'm not much of a cook but I know I need to try to get more whole grains in my diet. I'll look up some recipes. Asarver - I use skim milk because it has no fat and has about 1 gram of protein per ounce. I did try almond milk for awhile, but it has only about 1 gram of protein in a glass. Never heard of cashew/almond protein milk. I'll have to look for it. My doctor did suggest almond milk instead of cow's milk (hormones in milk).
