59Carol's Journal, 05 October 2019

There was a small gain. I had a complicated week. I went to my course. On the Sunday when it ended at noon I drove 4 hours to where my friend was and her son's family. My son drove 16 hours to be there as well. My daughter was also there. My son, as the best friend, was given the honour of being the person who went to the funeral home, and the hospital with his friend's wife and a variety of other chores. It was a tough time for him however he rose to the occasion. My daughter and her fellow cleaned up the crash site and assisted with the cooking. I was able to be there Sunday night and Monday and then had to drive back to Edmonton for appointments. Eating was hard to gauge over these days. While I have been in the city I have gone out for meals a few times with various friends which also is hard to judge. Tomorrow I will finish my course and head for home. I'll be stopping to pick up carrots from the son and wife's garden. I have been asked to pickle them as his wife did not do the canning, he did.

Since I have canned vegetables, I was asked to help out. In the end, a less than one pound gain was its own victory no matter how hard I found it to log it!

This coming weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving. I will be feeding two people following keto, one person who is vegetarian and two people who are following a CICO program and two people with no dietary preferences! I have a menu planned that should work for everyone. Once again, I may be tempted to stray from the straight and narrow.

so sorry for all this grief and heartache your families have gone through. you're doing a great job even if your scale went up a little. there are other priorities at this point so don't worry about this. It will all even out in the end.

Thank you Skinny. I know that I need to focus on the people around me while still taking care of myself so I am not terribly concerned about the modest gain. It will even out in the end. As a way of looking out for myself, I will be mindful of what I eat. Today supper is an unknown as I will be picking up something on the road home. I do know what I am having for breakfast and lunch which helps. The heartache just feels like it will never stop.

Sorry we did not get to meet up in Edmonton. You did really well in the weight arena as you began to cycle through such loss- you are such a wonderful caregiver to your family - and to yourself. Sounds like you have Thanksgiving dinner well planned. Im wondering if it will be the crustless pumpkin pie? I might try an almond crust with lots of spices— or both.

I am actually doing pretty good on the weight front since I got home which is encouraging! We will see on official weigh in day. I am making a crustless pumpkin pie and a keto pumpkin cream pie with an almond crust. I think I will be cooking in the two days leading up to our dinner so that I can accommodate all the food requirements of the family!

Busy and draining week, I bet. I'd count the 1 pound only gain as a victory, too. And happy Canadian Thanksgiving! :)

It was both busy and draining. Our young friend's death and his family's grief are all encompassing. It is hard but life is made up of just moving forward despite pain and tragedy. It also moves forward after great happiness and amazing achievements. The day to day is what makes up most of the fabric of life. I must say that I am glad to be in the 'lull' after the holiday! I enjoy the getting ready for a family event, however, I also enjoy the day to day working on projects and doing the ordinary things.
