Vocatus's Journal, 19 January 2019

Had our first Saturday session at the YMCA today with our Couch to 5K trainer. We walked about 10 minutes and ran a total of 10 minutes. The first of our allegedly two-minute runs was actually three-minutes -- he likes to increase our run time very sneakily, it seems. We did a three-minute run, two two-minute runs, then another three-minute run.

we worked on proper form for squats, lunges, pull-ups (not quite there yet!) and planks. I'm only good for about 35-40 seconds in plank -- though I did manage almost 50 seconds the one time I did that before any other exercises.

so we went from one-minute runs to two-minute runs Thursday, then Saturday got a couple of three-minute runs out. That's what I call progress! I've also noticed my recovery time is getting better.

On another note, my wife and I bought actual running shoes today. $70 for hers and $125 for mine (ouch), but the difference between these and our cheap-o Walmart shoes (hers cost like $6 and mine $10) was evident from the first step in them. We're only going to wear them on running days, and I'm excited to try them out Tuesday!

Good shoes are a must for running. It is very taxing on the system to run so it is worth the investment. It feels good to record running for exercise. I was out in fairly cold whether to job around. I don't think I could progress as fast as you did

thank you both! I keep telling myself the shoes are an investment lol. I know they're worth it. My cheap shoes have no support, and I feel every bit of that impact. I ran a couple laps around the store in the new shoes before actually buying, and it felt pretty great. These are cushiony and springy. When I strike, it feels like the ground pushes my feet back up :) And I didn't notice while wearing the new shoes, but once I put the old ones back on, I could feel the shock those new ones had been absorbing rather than sending to my knees.

Did they help you pick out a pair

Shoes are out in the car and I'm not sure where I put the receipt. I'll snap a pic tomorrow and upload :) Also, how are you making your smileys appear?

yeah, they measured my feet, then we tried on several pairs they brought from the back. I chose the best fit, and we discussed what to expect, performance wise. There was a stiffer pair that the lady said would probably last me a little while longer than these, but the ones I got were more comfortable right now, made my footfall a little lighter, and were $40 less. She said that the fit was more important, and that given the lower price, the slightly shorter lifespan of the shoe was probably not a net negative.

come to think of it, that other pair might have been a cross trainer anyway. I'm not too worried about getting any other function than walking/running on a track out of these. I have my cheap Walmart shoes for casual footwear and my steel toe work boots for anything that requires something a bit more rugged.

You won't regret buying quality shoes that fit. :)

I'm just ecstatic to have shoes that fit lol. I have crazy wide feet. Length wise, I'm a size 11. But my walmart shoes are 13W, my boots are 14W, and the 11 6E shoes at New Balance were still too narrow and hurt my toes a litte. I ended up with size 12 4Es, and they're great. I almost bet a 12 5 or 6E would fit even better, but these don't squeeze my toes really at all. Because of my crazy hobbit feet, If I don't get shoes that are too long, my feet overhang the base of the shoe, and I eventually blow out a side.

actually had a hilarious and slightly awkward moment with a Walmart cashier once. She scanned my boots and said something like "wow -- that's a big shoe!" I said "yep, and you know what they say about guys with big feet, right?" She asked what, with a wry smile. I said "can't buy shoes at Walmart anymore." I don't think she thought it was as funny as I did

I have never been able to buy cheap shoes. With terrible feet (minor congenital deformities) from the beginning, cheap shoes feel like shoeBOXES to me! I'm glad you and your wife made the investment in good shoes that fit. My husband is an 11EEEE, so I appreciate your struggle to find the right size. As for your workout, I could only fantasize about that routine -- ever, not just now!
