Ah, Monday, and it's my day off. Why is it that during the work week, I struggle to get out of bed at 7:30 when my alarm goes off, but on my weekends, I'm awake and chipper at 7 AM? Bah. At least I'm on a consistent sleep schedule.

I love summer because I get to swim laps. Yesterday, at the athletic club pool, everybody was fighting over lanes. Too few lanes, too many swimmers. It was getting cut throat. Everybody just needed to relax. I hopped in, did my laps, shared a lane, and nobody died. Who would have thought? I laughed all the way to the steam bath as I left the pool and everybody was being catty about lanes.

Speaking of steam baths.... OH MY GOSH. Steam baths. 100% humidity and extremely hot temperature. I don't think I've ever sweat that much in my whole life. All of my pores were opened up, from my head to my toes. Sweat dripping profusely. They provide eucalyptus oil sprays before you hop in, and the eucalyptus is so wonderful. It opens up your lungs and sinuses. I've discovered that I looooove that steam bath. Just not so much the completely nude old ladies I have to sit near.

So, I tried to go low carb for a few days. By the end of day 1, I was so cranky and miserable that I ate 2 pieces of 12 grain toast and went to sleep before I killed somebody. By the end of day 2, I had lost 3 pounds, was lethargic, nauseous, starving, and cranky. My coworker told me of carb-cycling, meaning you do low-carb for 2 days, regular carb intake for 1 day, and just cycle that way. I ate my normal diet yesterday (I didn't binge on pasta and garlic breads and rice... just my normal diet) and I felt so much better. What the last few days have taught me is to definitely keep informed on my carb intake, because I honestly didn't realize how much I was eating compared to protein. I think that although I'm not sure I can stick permanently to a low carb lifestyle, I can definitely increase my protein and cut out the excessive carbs I've been eating. It's all a learning experience, and I'm happy to have lasted the two days that I did, haha!

I hope everybody has a wonderful Monday, or for me, Meatless Monday. I guess I have to go for a run now. Wish me luck :)

Just for kicks, why not try cutting wheat products and ignore how many carbs you are eating? Get your carbs from veggies and fruit. It may be worth a try. I was never able to maintain on a low carb diet.

I agree with Soulnoid. I get carbs from fruits and veggies and try to avoid starchy stuff like rice, wheat, pastas and breads, etc. I will eat a sweet potato once a week and summer corn on the cob once a week. Your NET carbs are what is important, I feel. That is total carbs minus total fiber - so more fibrous options are better for me.

Everyone's body works differently I have friends that did amazing on atkins and primal while others need very little protein. I'm kinda in the middle. I find that I do keep the bread, grains, pasta etc to a min the majority of the time and most of my carbs are fruits and veggies (veggies I eat a lot and try to watch my high sugar fruits although I've been a bit off and loving it in my shakes lately). I am hypoglycemic so I have to have some carbs or my bloodsugar goes all wacky. Fruits and veggies seem to complete it with the occasional dairy carb, etc. I recently found a protein bread that has been a godsend for those sandwich cravings. Maybe just try a bit of a balance for now? Took me forever to find the right balance. Not feeling well won't do yourself and good, been there. Good luck :-)

I agree with all of the above... I won't do low carb because I won't sustain it, so the past few weeks I've just been trying to cut it down a bit. Under 200g carbs and at least 100g protein. Does not sound low at all but I was consistently 250g+ of carbs when I was just looking at calories. Just like the whole healthy lifestyle, trying to make little changes one at a time and see how it goes! Enjoy the run!!

The transition period for low-carb can definitely be brutal for some. Just gotta go into it smart. Have something tasty to keep your taste buds satisfied; chicken and fish, veggies, fruit, almonds... strawberries do the trick really well for me.
