VAM49's Journal, 22 July 2018

I think I've gone the highest on carbs today since I started at end of April: I'm at 41.09 and haven't had dinner yet. Having wine cause it's been a xxxxx of a day. I'm using that as an excuse for making a choice that doesn't support what I'm committed to. And I also feel like a brat who says "you can't make me" when I know very well I could dump it down the drain. I also don't plan to dump. I plan to finish it and deal with the consequences. I will learn from this. Tomorrow. After waking up with a headache from drinking red wine. Oooh - and there was me justifying my actions with the "I'll learn from it" while again noting I could just dump it... sometimes I hate having a brain. OK. Just dumped it and changed my wine from 8 oz to 3.5oz reducing carbs to 24 so far today. Better.

I'll still probably wake with a headache, but now I've practiced taking responsible action when I notice I'm doing something inconsistent with my goals. Might seem silly to others, but letting go of "you can't make me!" and taking on "what am I committed to?" is a pat on the back moment for me:)

Spectacular! When I'm weak and buy chips, I usually end up putting the rest of the bag in the toilet. That way I can't be tempted to sneak them at all lol

The carb/calorie content of any alcoholic beverage is a function of the alcohol amount/percentage. Ethyl alcohol (the kind in beverages) is 7 calories/gram. Sooo ..... wine that is 12% (24 proof) alcohol is 84 calories per 100 mls (3 1/3 ounces.). To know the calorie content of any alcoholic beverage, multiply the alcohol percentage ( half the “proof” number) by 7. That gives you the calories per 3 1/3 ounces. I am puzzled by the interest in low carb/no carb diets. The brain uses only glucose for its energy source and it is preferred by most tissues. The brain uses ~20% of the basal metabolic rate and will have its glucose. The body will convert protein and fats to glucose quickly and easily so ..... why not just consume some carbs? A keto diet, or any restrictive diet that demonizes any nutrient group, is just that .... a diet. You may reach your weight goal but haven’t learned how to eat for the rest of your life. #sfth6

@ Gail, since starting Keto my glucose is down (I was pre diabetic) my cholesterol is down, and I was able to stop taking my meds for Neuropathy. So Keto/low carb is a way I will be eating for the rest of my life.

Thanks everyone - I must say Mollyann - that sounds incredibly effective for getting rid of something you don't want to eat more of - it was going to end up there anyway ha ha! And Gail - I do consume some carbs and I get the concept, yet when I eat higher carb food (sugar and starch) including corn, potatoes, fruit, chocolate, candy… I don’t want to stop for a long, long time. I don’t get full until I’ve had a ridiculous number of servings and I want more and I give in and have more. And have not been able to lose weight – actually have not been able to stop gaining weight and got to 75 lbs over my healthy weight. Now I have knee and foot problems along with too much weight. When I focus on eating fats in place of carbs and keep protein about the same, I can easily stop eating when I’m done with a meal. And if I get hungry at times I’m OK with being hungry because the hunger no longer is all consuming. And I don’t question if I’ll give in because I’m not craving or drooling over avocados, dark chocolate, butter and cheese the way I used to crave and drool over yet another handful of cherries or another serving of sweet potatoes or fried potatoes with ketchup or more chocolate no matter how much chocolate I just ate. So I'm doing this for a while and will eventually gradually add in different carbs to see what triggers me and what works for me:)

Hi Vam49, I agree that high carb foods can be difficult to eat in moderation ..... that doesn’t mean that they are bad for you. If you can’t be moderate now, don’t have your “trigger “ foods in your house. I don’t buy salty snacks and have a glass of wine occasionally when I am out. Still working on not having an open bottle of wine calling to me from the kitchen 🤷‍♀️😳🍷.

Hi Kimberliefielding, Losing weight will improve blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol and many other risk factors for diseases. I wouldn’t thank the keto diet in particular. You don’t have to believe me, check with your doctor or a dietitian.

I saw my doctor a week ago Thursday. He is a fan of Keto and said that the diet changes are what has changed my health. I had blood work prior to the visit. Sooo, thanks for the suggestion of me seeing my medical provider. Already done. As for your opinion of what has changed my health, it is just that, your opinion.

Gail531.— I am not a dieter just a food monitor. Before I saw your post I had posted an image on my journal of a heading from Scientific American essentially about the cause of obesity. The article was. From 2013. This keto thing, crazy as it seems to many of us, is gaining more and more acceptance from the scientific and medical community. I have read what so many of these people here have written for the last 6 months. I see value in this plan for some.people— not necessarily long term but for a lesser period. . I have some criticisms of what many people here are doing but they are doing it and many of them are keeping their medical providers in the loop, and are or have seen dieticians. Do you have some kind of medical background? I have not seen your tag come across, so am I correct that you may be newer to this group.? Welcome, regardless. Google this article and read it and it may give some insite into what these folks are trying to accomplish. I would love to hear from you Gail.

VAM great job on the dumping. Low carb woe has been around for a long time going back to the 1700's treating diabetics. Don't give up, stay strong.
