Kenna Morton's Journal, 22 July 2018

I originally became involved with FS for two reasons. #1 I had just returned from a trip to the SW for a couple weeks. Had fun, gained 5-6 lb — you eat what you can find in some of those out of the way places. #2 I had several friends with significant weight issues, pre diabetic, now with Metforman and Insulin. Thought we would do it as a team effort. One has since died— heart attack, and the other has pretty much made up her mind that she prefers dying to “dieting”. Her choice. Now I just use the site to monitor my intake because I have more trouble keeping my weight up where I want it (118).

Hi Kenna, Yes, I do have a medical background. For 40 years my clinical specialty was the physiology and biochemistry of how the body uses nutrients, macro and micro. I am a pharmacist who was there for the development of parenteral nutrition and attendant advancements in measuring energy expenditure and changing nutrient utilization in metabolic stress. We learned a lot about what the body needs and uses in differing hormonal milieus and in the non-stressed state. What the body uses is determined by what it needs to accomplish at any given moment, not by what is eaten. I was faculty in the School of Pharmacy at UCSF. I read the Scientific American article with interest. It asks the question, “What makes you fat” but doesn’t answer the question. Taubes writes about his suppositions and experiments he would like to conduct. I also watched a Stanford University Health Policy Forum in conversation with Christopher Gardner. Gardner is a professor of medicine and and nutrition at Stanford. I recommend it to you. Taubes has many personal opinions and hypotheses but no answers. To be continued ...

Hi Gail— it’s all such a fascinating subject. later today I’m going to look for follow up literature on that 2013 article. Many people here have very successfully lost weight — of course the question is long term sustainability. Even the ADA and ACC are looking at this as a possible kick start solution. We’ll see, but very interesting to follow.
