Day 1 of a planned 5 day fast

The big deal this weekend for me was to not gain weight on my 'refeeding' (when I eat on the weekends after a 5 day fast). My goal was to keep my carbs down to less than 20 a day. Failed at that (no surprise), but, came close, and close counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and dieting :)

Anyway, I only gained a pound :)

I decided to look at my refeedings for the past 3 weekends:

07/13 - 07-15 - (166 carbs - 3333 calories) = +1 pounds gained
07/06 - 07/08 - (261 carbs - 4719 calories) = +4 pounds gained
06/29 - 07/01 - (178 carbs - 3869 calories) = +0 pounds gained

For me, it seems, lower carbs means less weight gained when refeeding.

However, I am always consuming refined carbs. I eat very little fruit. I think fruit may be different because there are a lot of people on this site that can take in carbs from fruit and seem to do just fine.

My goal this week is to take in as few carbs as I can while on my water fast. Carbs still sneak is via granulated Splenda in my Green tea, and flavored coffee from Starbucks. I can only do the best I can :) I actually enjoy my fasts. They are not something I 'endure'. So, If I feel like a sugary drink I will have it. I just now know my weight loss will slow.

@chrisw77 - Yeah I agree. So far (and these things change over time as my body changes) it appears that 1500 calories and 50 carbs is my "normal" range when eating. Ironically I FEEL better when fasting ('emptiness' feels better than 'full' to me because 'emptiness' lasts as long as you want it to whereas 'full' will always go away and you have to 'reload' to bring it back, but, I feel I am 'chasing fullness' like a drug). When I make it to 'maintenance' I may up my calorie/carbs on eating days so I can still fast a few days a week.

@chrisw77 - I actually pulled off a OMAD yesterday! So far I am 1 for like 9 tries haha The thing that made this attempt different was that I was at a party with a huge spread. I knew if I had one bite I would go on a binge to end all binging. There was every possible food just sitting there. We were at the party all day. Could not eat until we got home...

good control is all I can say. and keeping your carbs reasonable is a real break through

@baskington - Also, except for my protein powder, I tried to stay away from anything that was not "real food". I ate things that you have to "cook" (or was cheese) :) I think this made a huge difference in my ability to cut the carbs. Still wish I was able to get it to <20 carbs a day. I averaged more than twice that a day! :(. Will try again this weekend...

@chrisw77 - The reason I try to get my carbs low is that goal is to reduce my insulin. When my insulin is low I lose weight. I monitor my blood glucose daily. The best method I have to control my blood glucose is to cut carbs. This is why I fast. The only way for me to get a <5 carbs per day is by fasting (mostly because by 'not eating' I don't 'over eat' and go on a 'carb binge').

I think getting more carbs by low carb veggies may work out for you in the long run but one step at a time. with your wife getting into the keto lifestyle I think slowly you may start to incorporate some of these things in your refeed time. the fiber is good for you too.

@baskington - My wife controls 90% of what I eat so her Keto meals will *result in me doing Keto* :)
