How I lost 4 pounds in one day (again)

Let’s go over what happened:

1) Woke up with a weight of 182 and a glucose reading of 78

2) Wanted a treat, and Dr. Fung says I can have coffee with whole milk so I got a latte (not sure if Dr. Fung would approve of this choice but I did a glucose reading 2 hours later and I only went up to 84)

3) I then went for a 1 ½ hour 7 mile run

4) When I got back I took a glucose reading and I was down to 68!

5) I got on the scale and I was down to 178! (4 pounds lost and the day was not over yet!)

6) I then drank a liter of water (1 liter of water = 2.2 pounds) got back on the scale and I was back up to 180 pounds)

Anyway, I am finally getting off the CICO (Calories In Calories Out) bandwagon. I still believe in the law of thermodynamics, but I can’t just calculate the calories I take in, the calories I burn, and then expect the scale (which is measuring the fat and water in my body), to line up.

Lets’ look at my day again…

1) Wake up with a body that is filled with fat and water. But, here is the point, I also have an insulin producing pancreas and a glucose producing liver. These are actually major players in the drama that is about to unfold…

2) I have a latte. I didn’t need it because my body already converted fat into needed glucose using gluconeogenesis (https://bit.ly/2LhMxPZ) (remember I am fasting so my body is not getting it the normal way). This is where the pancreas releases insulin that triggers the liver to produce glucose (now I could be in ketosis and my body would be using a slightly different process, but according to this article I would need more days for that to happen: https://bit.ly/2H2WBLA).

3) I then drag my fat ass full of fat and water and glucose out for a run (I have a 84 reading at this point after the latte).

4) My body burns through the glucose (my glucose reading is down to 68) and with it the water. “Each gram of glycogen is associated with 3-4 grams of water” (See: Losing Water Weight: How Carbs Really Work: https://bit.ly/2nkvUez).

5) This is why I get back and I have lost 4 pounds! Here is where I have to stop and see that if I weighed 182 before the run, and my run only burned 1500 calories, and a pound of fat is about 3500 calories, I should have only lost ½ a pound not 4 pounds. Of course I did not lose 4 pounds of FAT! I lost ½ a pound of FAT and 3 ½ pounds of WATER! Keep in mind my body is mostly composed of water so we can do these water fluctuations all day, but we also have to accept that my calories expended is NOT directly related to my weight.

6) I drank a bottle of water, that has NO CALORIES, and I still gained 2 pounds in 3 minutes. Again, I took in NO CALORIES and I GAINED weight.

Go ahead and flame me for this post. Everyone is welcome to believe what they want to believe. I am just explaining why after reading two of Dr. Fung’s books, I now believe my insulin is what causes me to be fat not my calories consumed. This is why I fast, to control my insulin, not my calories.

And this is why I really need to stay away for lattes during a fast because they are not helping 😊

im still learning about fasting, so i dont man my questions negatively. but so if i constantly have water in and out, and i drop in weight, would you still think its water weight?

@ClarityAnn - Thanks! I posted that for my future self to read if I forget what really happened :)

great job! much respect to you and your journey!

@kaylinrenee - I can only speak for my experience. After losing 20 pounds in 60 days I doubt that it is 'only water weight' that I lost :) However, I think that it is at least 50% water because I can gain 6 pounds in just two days of eating a lot of carbs. I believe what is happening is that my body loads up on the glucose (in the food I eat) and the water that must be bound to the glucose molecules. I mean I only eat say 5000 calories in two days, how does that translate to 6 pounds of fat? Now Dr. Fung says I should eat low carb when I eat if I don't want to gain the weight back (less glucose, less water, less weight). Heck if I could do that I would just do strait keto and not fast at all :) Anyway, I suggest getting the information from the experts: "The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting" - https://amzn.to/2LV5yci

You are so overthinking this— but I’m glad you are having fun doing it and it really does brings to mind how complicated our bodies really are and The abuse they tolerate from us and try to compensate for.

i really enjoy your posts. Dr. Fung knows his stuff. I want to get his book. People don't understand the main reason for fasting. It not only gives the body time to heal when not having to process food, but it helps repair the mitochondria. Dr. Mercola explains the role of healing the mitochondria by keeping your BG in the 70's. His Fat For Fuel book is very informative, for those of us who want to become fat burners instead of sugar burners. You are on the track and the only reason people would flame you is because they don't understand how the body uses glucose in relationship to fat. Every one is unique and we all have to find what works for us. Some people I know have to eat carbs, and do just fine. Carbs do not agree with me so I have learned from trial and error to keep them low. There to so much free information on mercola.com

Nice post and I agree, lattes are probably not a good choice while fasting. 😉❤️

Between the water and latte you just had a fluctuation..it will turn around..Try not to over think.

Driniking water and other fluids will cause a transient weight gain (until it's urinated out). Water weight shifts are responsible for most of the day-to-day fluctuations we see in weight. Don't overthink it, or if you find it bothers you a lot, simply weigh in less often (say, once or twice a week instead of multiple times a day).

@MillaLite - I am so glad you pointed me in that direction to get a glucose meter. It is my main 'tool' now. The weight scale has just too many variables (4 pounds up and down in one day). I am now a firm follower of Dr. Fung who says insulin is the issue. Well, without the ability to measure my insulin, the glucose meter is my only tool to measure what is going on. When I fast the level is low. When I eat certain things, WHOA! I can shoot up to 120 and stay above 100 most of the day. Get on the scale the next day and I will see pounds added. Yeah is mostly water weight, but keep that up day after day and it wont 'just be water weight' :(

@MillaLite - So I had a Starbucks Caffè Misto this morning (5 carbs), took a reading an hour later and it pushed me only into the mid 80's. I then went for a 5 mile run, took a reading 59 :)

@MyJazzy2 - I tried to go to mercola.com. Is that the right address?

Interesting, but as a former nurse that 68 is scary. Will check out this Dr. Fung. And please carry ID at all times, just in case.

When my BS declines to the 60s mg/dL -- and *definitely* in the 50s -- I have hypoglycemic symptoms (sudden feelings of hunger, then shaky/sweaty). As a diabetic, that only happens when I overestimate my dose of Humalog (short-acting insulin). I have chewable glucose tablets (4g carbs each, for better control of the carb load than with juice or honey) for such occasions.

@Miraculum - That makes sense that REALLY low BS would trigger hypoglycemic symptoms. However, I haven't had that. Perhaps my body doesn't stay low for long. Also, after 5 days of fasting the BC is from gluconeogenesis not carbs. Perhaps that is the difference?

adefwebserver... try this https://www.mercola.com/. I thing it needs the www. Also, draxe.com is a great site with so much information about MCT, dieting and proper use of E.Os.

@MyJazzy2 - Thanks! That worked.
