heidij123's Journal, 25 September 2016

We arrived back in Spain on Monday evening, and heard at Tuesday lunchtime that one of our bandmates had died. He had cancer last year, had been given the all-clear in January, then in August was told he had only a few months, so we knew he was going, but didn't expect it to be so quick. Better for him that way, I think, and it sounds like he was playing guitar up until the last couple of days.

His wife asked us to play some music at the funeral service, which was on Thursday (they don't hang around in Spain). We got together with the others for a practice on Wednesday, and then the service was on Thursday. The family had brought his guitar to the church, and his music bag. It was strange to be at the front facing everyone, so I spent most of the time looking down. We did three songs, one at the beginning, one in the middle, and one at the end of the service. The last one really made me want to cry, as it was his favourite. We talked to his sons afterwards, who were over from Belgium for the funeral (that's where he and his wife are from). One said he might come along and play with us when he's visiting.

We also had a few little problems in the house (leaking water pipe, invasion of moth larvae), plus a lot of cleaning, washing and sorting out of clothes to do, and actually an issue within the band to resolve as well. But everything is on the improve now. We went to a nice choir concert last night, bumped into a few people we know, and I'm now looking forward to getting back into our normal life here.

I haven't done too badly on food this week, though it could have been better, but have done practically no exercise, so need to get cracking on that. It has been rather warm though, not hot, just rather warm and humid. Hoping for more exercise-friendly temperatures this week, but if not, I think I should just get out there and do it anyway.

Sorry about your bandmate. I'm sure he would have loved that you played his favourite song at the end.

Definitely not the sort of gig you want.

No, but it was good to be able to say goodbye to him with music. Would rather not have had to say goodbye, though. Two of the new songs we've been learning over the summer are Kinks ones that were more of his favourites, and I've been working hard on the bass on those, and really looking forward to his reaction when he heard me play them, so I feel kind of cheated, on top of everything else. We are really going to miss him! And Doobrie, yes, Nights in White Satin, definitely what he would have asked for.

Nights in White Satin - that was one of my favourite songs at one time. Would have me in tears at a funeral.

Hi Heidi, I'm so sorry to hear about your bandmate. What a lovely touch to include one of his favourites in tribute...it must have been a tough day but I'm sure everyone appreciated the gesture (and it's such a beautiful song as well). I also wanted to say on a totally unrelated note that your new profile pic is amazing! I love that top on you as well...I hadn't been online much more lately than to log, so I know it may be a bit late in commenting, but hey-ho.

No, I only changed the pic yesterday. It's actually a dress, and it only just fits, and the fabric is quite thin, so I'd be worried about it splitting if I ate anything, lol! I'm hoping it won't be quite so tight soon 😀 Then I just need an occasion to wear it....

Hehehe - well fair enough! Trust me though, you can rock some red! That's a great colour on you and I know you'll be feeling svelte in that in no time. :)
