kingkeld's Journal, 18 November 2011

Today, my scale showed good stuff and "bad" stuff. Bad stuff isn't really that bad, just one of the things I don't like as much as others: I gained a little weight. I gained 200 grams, which is really no big deal. Doing the Indulgence Diet my weight fluctuates like crazy anyways, and me being sick definitely does a number on me. Of course we all hope for a new lowest weigh-in every day - it just doesn't happen. However, when I look at the OTHER numbers on the scale, I'm a happy bunny again! I see that my fat percentage is back down to 12 - which is creepy low for me. This usually happens when I have lost "fat weight" but am retaining water or something else is going on. "Something else" could easily be that I am sick and didn't move at all yesterday. Another cool number is my "visceral fat" percentage. This one rarely moves down, it only happens about once every month. Well, I got an "8" on this today, for the first time. Of course, it is probably up a little again tomorrow or Sunday, but it's nice to see it peeking in on me for the first time. I love that my smart smart scale shows me progress even when I am not losing weight. Thanks for being a good friend, smart smart scale! :)

So, what else happened yesterday?

Well, nothing much, really. I was sick. I was basically sitting in my old-man-chair all day, surfing a little online and generally feeling bad for myself. Head is still pounding today, but I'm trying to ignore it.
I did introduce Wife to the movie Fat Head, and she was very intrigued - even if she fell asleep after about 30 minutes. She works hard and comes home tired so there is always a good chance that a movie will put her to sleep. This morning she asked me if we could watch it again today - she really wants to stay away and see it. I'm happy that she's hooked. I like that movie. If you guys haven't watched it, you really should!

Thanks to the mighty internet, I am even able to help you get your hands on it! Take a look at the bottom of this journal. I highly recommend that you watch it - it has so much good stuff in there. Of course, as always with documentaries, keep in mind that he made this movie to DISPROVE "Supersize Me" and that you - just as he promotes - are allowed to think for yourself before taking any kinds of advice.
When people make a documentary, they usually set out to prove a point. They will use all the documentation they can get that supports their theories, and ignore what doesn't fit in. I am sure Fat Head is just like that too - even if it seems that he is generally sharing good information. Watch, take from it what you feel like, enjoy. He pretty much sums up everything that I have done to lose weight, so I have deep respect for this guy.

The only thing that I really never looked at (until recently) was my carb number. I'm honestly not sure HOW big a factor carbs make when you have your calorie deficit. Fat Head dude goes for "somewhere around 100 grams per day", and that is not too hard to do. I have recently implemented this in my food logging, but have yet to see results of it. I'm sure it'll come - or will it? How much does it matter? Maybe someone can enlighten me?

I do know that it demands more of me when I log my food. I now have two things to keep an eye on. Not only the calories, but also the carbs. It makes some of my offline tools worthless, or at least they need severe modifications. Oh, well. I'm gonna use them forever anyways, so I might as well bite the bullet and correct them to fit this.

So, today is another sick day. I'm pretty sure that exercise bike is out of the question. I need to save my energy for getting better. My head hurts and I am sure that headaches and workouts are bad for each other. Oh well.

So next step is just to be here and try to take it easy. I'm doing all I can on my weight loss without doing too much. I had two eggs for breakfast at 5 am, sent Wife off to work, writing journal now while petting the cat (she is loving that daddy-O is home!) while having a cup of almond flavored coffee. I think I will watch a movie or two, if my head will allow it. Wife is home from work early, and we'll probably make a vegetarian egg pie. Those are sooooo good!

Have a great day everyone! Headache or not, it's Friday! It's a great day and the weekend will be awesome!

Now, before I leave you completely, here is the Fat Head movie! Enjoy!

I aim for 100ish carbs a day as well- just as a guide, I find it makes a differance on the scale as well. I dont always meet that goal, but Im mindful of it. Im feeling pretty aweful too, hope you get well soon!

Thanks, Sarah. It's nice to know that I'm on the right track on this, and great to hear that you can tell a difference. (or, if we are wrong about the carbs, then at least we're wrong together! LOL!)

morning KingKeld.... Sounds like the "worst" is over - and I agree - you should shelve the exercise, so your body has the energy to fight the germs. Visceral fat of 8 - great - it does take ages to get down, I find I get a lower reading then it goes back up, then appears again and usually after about 10 days will be there constantly. Re the carb thing; I TRY to watch my carbs, my aim is to eat more Grms of protein than carbs. I don't very often achieve this. If it is roughly the same no grms I am happy. Too many carbs (of the White kind bread rice, potato, pasta) tend to bloat me, if I do eat them - in small quantities - I have the brown / whole variety. Enjoy your day :-) and speedy recovery

Morning! Sorry to hear you are still "under the weather" but it does sound like you are on the mend. Yes ... wouldn't it be lovely if everyday we saw a decline (or at least no gain) according to the scale. Yesterday I had a "new" low, today it has bounced back to 203.2 I think it was. I wrote it down but I don't really care to remember it. I didn't watch my carbs for a very long time and lost weight just fine. This past year I've become a little more mindful and then recently, much more so, focusing on more protein and minimizing carbs (especially the "white" ones). It does seem to make a difference in how full I feel. I'm trying to keep mine under 50, which isn't too much of a challenge if you aren't eating bread, potatoes, rice and the like!! Enjoy your Friday at home with the kitty. I'm going to brave the drive to town this morning since I have clients to see today. Take care!!

I really enjoyed the first part, where he proved supersize me wrong, the second part just rubbed me the wrong way as I felt he claimed he was the only one that was right, but then that is because I love my carbs and wouldnt want to go without them

I have been low carbing for almost 2 years now, and I can really tell when I overindulge...I feel horrid, and the rest of the world suffers also...just makes me so bloated and gassy. I am sticking to about 50 a day or less, and those are in the form of acceptable veggies, some fruits, and hard cheeses. Have a great day, and sure hope your head starts feeling better.

Good stuff guys, but with carbs, the better carbs to go with are complex-meaning it takes more energy from your body to digest, thus, calories burned instead of the refined or simple carbs turning to addl fat. Whole GRAIN bread is better, avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup, and eat TONS of green veggies. These have complex carbs and they're low cal to boot... best of both worlds there. King, you're still doing great! I hope you feel better real quick, and as I tell my family when they're sick, bundle up and sleep. You'll sweat the toxins out and your body repairs itself when you sleep. Get some rest and HYDRATE!! (I'm jealous that you have a medicine kitty!)
