Yay I hit the 130s! Weight loss is going well and people are noticing, especially my partner. It’s mango season and we have lots of delicious mangoes, but unfortunately both my partner and I have rashes on our face from eating them. I’ve learned that I’m definitely allergic to touching the skin and the sap. I’m not sure if that means I’m also allergic to the inside bits because I’ve never had a problem there. I need to find out because my fiancé is canning and freezing all of them… three trees of bountiful harvest! Today is normally my day off but I switched days so I could have a long weekend and to finish some work for the end of the fiscal year. Hopefully I will get off early enough to get some exercise in. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Oh gosh, be careful with those mangos. Be sure you've got some benadryl available when you try eating them.

My daughter has the same reaction. I believe it’s called mango mouth. It’s from the oils in the skin. They are closely related to poison oak! So how we found out…. Our daughter would get this rash all around her mouth. We began to suspect it was from her loving up on our cats, and the cats had poison oak oil on them from being in the poison oak behind our home. So we went back there and pulled out and removed the poison oak, whilst and at the same time, getting the absolute worst poison oak rash ever. I had armored scales on my arms from so much poison oak. Went right through what we wore for protection. And it was everywhere! And I do mean everywhere. So we thought the problem solved when she again had a rash around the mouth. So my wife is looking up more about poison oak and finds that it is related to the oils in the skin of mangos. Bingo! My daughter loves mangos! When we found out, she stopped eating them completely. She has begun to eat then again, cautiously. She eats dried mangos with no reaction. I don’t recall if she has had fresh mango yet.

Yes, congrats on your 130's breakthrough! I lived in Hawaii long ago, and we got rashes when we binged on Mangoes, but not when eating them more occasionally.

Good for you on the 130s, that's fantastic! As for mangos, I peel them using a vegetable peeler, never have a problem eating them. Hope you can still enjoy them.

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate all your support! Internet says mango allergy is rare, but both my partner and I have it, at least the skin allergy part. And I see a couple of you also have it or know someone who does. There’s been too many incidences to think it’s something else. Decades ago when I was a grocery cashier I used to scan mangoes very carefully because the skin would give me such an immediate tingly feeling. We wouldn’t “buy them from another store” since they are free from our yard. So options are to use them or give them away, and we will do a little of both either way. For now we are eating them but being careful of the skin and careful not to overdo them in case of internal allergies. For some they can cause anaphylaxis so it’s no joke. Thankfully not for us though.

Taken from the Discovery Channel website: “Mango and poison ivy are both in the cashew family, and both contain a substance called urushiol (yu-roosh’-ee-all). It’s the poison in poison ivy, the cause of the blisters and itching. The mango contains much, much less of the irritant than poison ivy, but despite that, some very sensitive people can get a rash just from handling mango peel and being exposed to its sap. Luckily, more often than not, even sensitive people can enjoy the delectable fruit of the mango, provided someone else peels it for them.” I am also very allergic to poison ivy - when I was little I used to get it all the time and once got it so bad that I was totally unrecognizable from the bumps and swelling and my eyes swole almost entirely shut. Well… I learn something new every day!

Grab a pair of latex gloves and peel away! And I sure wish we could get fresh mango off the tree, so jealous. My daughter may not be too much but I am. 😉
