Beverly Hills Diet continues to go well, another half-pound gone and sliding down to 133. Having a watermelon day, which causes bloating by evening from all the juice, but my skin is radiant and thanks me every morning (and I have brutal, mean and harsh lighting in my bathroom, so Mirror tells the truth. Its partner in crime, Scale, sits below, like 2 thugs hanging out, waiting to exact punishment on me when I enter).

Beautiful day for a nice hike through the canyon. Happy Hump Day, All

@Chevre: I approach the bathroom thugs in the mornings like a victim seeking justice from the Godfather.

It is actually not the water that causes the bloating. Watermelon is very high on the glycemic index. It’s sugar content is fructose (fruit sugar) that can be tough on the digestive systems of many people. It is a fermentable carbohydrate, poorly absorbed so it is fermented in the gut by bacteria causing bloating, stomach pain and diarrhea in many people. Generally avoid eating it at night when our digestive processes slow down naturally.

Hi Kenna-- thanks for the explanation! On watermelon days I'll eat it for breakfast/lunch, then switch to a different fruit for dinner. I'm always fine the next morning, tummy bloat gone, stomach is back to nice & flat. The trade-off is that it tastes soooooo good for next to nothing in calories.

@Kmwallace: I wrote a journal on April 20 with details on this diet if you want to check it out. Overall, my weight loss for this past year has been focused on avoiding all processed foods, eating veggies & fruits raw as much as possible, and incorporating nuts & seeds with dinners. I cook from scratch at home, and in restaurants I usually just stick to salads with oil & vinegar. Avoiding alcohol, dairy, sucrose/sugar substitutes and powdered/processed/packaged foods is key for me.

JustBananas— apples and pears are in the same classification and can cause the same issue with bloating if overeaten. There are probably others as well but as a quickie those were the most obvious. As you study nutrition you will also find that a “raw” diet may not always be the most optimal. There are critical nutrients that cannot be unlocked from raw food. They need heat to unlock their chemistry to make them accessible and absorbable. And, conversely, there are nutrients that are destroyed by heat. Fascinating subject.

@Kenna: I do cook, dinners usually, but prefer fresh fruits & salads for their crisp texture. I roast Brussel sprouts, eggplant, potatoes, cook rice, beans and lentils, and make my own tomato sauce for pasta, along with caramelized onions with roasted garlic & peppers. But on lazy days, I keep it raw. I've made it all the way to 50 without heart disease, diabetes, cancer, (or any disease, really) by sticking to a natural foods WOE. To fill in any nutritional gaps, I take a daily multivitamin.
