cocobutt's Journal, 29 January 2011

Hosted dinner for a couple of friends last night. Mr Coco made his out of this world lasagna and fruit crumble. Also had a divine arugula salad with toasted pecans and a few glasses of wine. Even some peasant bread. Ate more than usual, but we didn't overstuff. Gave the leftovers to my mom and dad and aunt. Will take the rest of the dessert to my friend tomorrow.

My mom and aunt made a tempura and sashimi feast for us for lunch today. Then they showed us a family heirloom that I'd never seen before. It really just killed me. My Japanese grandmother, who died around 1993, had written haiku on a long sheet of rice paper, using a brush (sumi-e). It was a poem about her life and that she had written in the 1980s. My aunt and I burst into tears as she interpreted it for us.

I know what kind of writing you're talking about. I learned that writing with brush when I was little. I didn't continue. We also have that family poem from our grandfather and my uncle keeps it since my father passed away. Have a great week, coco!
