cocobutt's Journal, 01 January 2011

We are going to our next door neighbor's New Year's Day Japanese feast this afternoon to run their buffet gauntlet. Last night, it was NYE Japanese feast at my Mom's and I confess I ate much more than I should've. I even said those dreaded words as I saw the wasted food on my daughter's plate: are you going to eat that? That's how I earned my former nickname from her, Garby D. As in, Garbage Disposal. Embarrassing. And my daughter has been so proud of me for finally shedding so much weigh this year. My slip-up last night can't be a return to bad habits. It was just that, a small slip.

It's really funny how in this little corner of the Southern US, there are 2 families with Japanese backgrounds living next door to each other by random chance. My neighbor is a third- or maybe fourth-generation Japanese American. Her family all live in Utah, but her husband's job brought them here about 5 years ago. They're the kindest, sweetest neighbors ever. The husband is not Japanese, so their 5 kids are half-Japs like me. It's funny to see myself and my siblings in those kids, a mix of Western and Asian features.

It's a really warm and muggy day for Jan. 1. I imagine we'll be staying indoors a lot because it's rainy too. So between bowl games, my daughter and I will be playing with the X-Box 360 that I got for Christmas. We've been having a blast playing Dance Central. It will wear you out! I'm extremely uncoordinated. I seem to have a lack of awareness of how my body moves in space -- sort of a physical dyslexia. Well, maybe I'll burn more calories that way.

Despite my holiday slip-ups, I'm feeling pretty stoked about how far I've come since May. I told Mr Coco that I feel so much better than I did this time last year. There are times when I can actually say I have boundless energy. Even last night I was practically running up and down the stairs at my Mom's house to fetch things from the basement. Didn't break a sweat or huff-and-puff. What a difference.

So I'm determined to keep going. Thank you, all my wonderful buddies, for helping me get this far! I really owe a lot of my success to y'all!

Happy New Year! Don't worry about a little over-indulgence. Think of all you've accomplished in the past year.

Thanks, buddies! @Stef -- yes, Japanese food is one of my weaknesses. I used to buy the white sticky rice (the kind used to make nigiri sushi) in 20-lb bags! Not any more. @Rune -- I am admitting my over-indulgences and will move on. I have confidence in my ability to change my habits. I will Just Say No to overeating today.

Happy New Year! I think it's fine to indulge (and even over-indulge) from time to time as long as you get back on track. Sushi sounds SO good right now. Yum.
