Fritzy 22's Journal, 20 March 2020

The whole state of California has been told to "stay at home", or shelter in place, a lockdown. We can still go to the grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, even order food to go at any open restaurant. I have a prescription to pick up today and was thinking of stopping in at the grocery store for milk and a few food items if it doesn't look crowded. I have enough food to last, maybe a month if I get to everything. I have a couple boxes of cream of wheat that I might start eating for breakfast as long as I have milk. Lots of rice and some bread in the freezer. Nothing for snacks, maybe that's a good thing!

Morning Fritzy. Hope you have a good day. Hope your day goes well. We do not have a lock down order here but people are staying indoors and abiding by the 2 meter rules etc. We are all in the same boat all over I think.

Good morning Fritz. I hope the store isn't crowded so you can get the things you need.

Thanks Liv! Thanks Tatauu - I really only want to get milk, but can do without it.

Stores are being forcefully regulated for crowds where I am. It is a good thing.

Check the grocery store for shelf stable milk products. We have purchased both milk and almond beverage. Most are shelf stable for up to a year.

liv001, seniors in our area are the only people allowed in grocery stores the first hour of opening.

I broke down .. ordered tortilla chips. Mostly fresh produce but I wanted some chips.

Liv - there weren't more people in the store than usual. Erquiaga - there was no milk, bread, paper products or bottled water in the store. Less than usual amount of produce and meat. I bought almond milk for the reason you stated - the expiration date is much longer than milk. Bella - the chip isle was full and lots of boxed cookies. I did good, got a couple of Marie Callendar's chicken pot pies for the freezer and some frozen green beans for Bobby. Oh, and then I remembered to get 2 butterfingers! I asked the cashier how often milk was delivered and he named the days of the week when it arrived including Friday. He said it should be there between 9 and 1. I was there at 9. As I was leaving I saw the bread truck arrive and a Boar's Head truck coming up the street as I headed towards the gas station. I did all my errands and am deciding whether to go back for the milk.

Stay healthy friends, it all starts at home with the foods we eat.

There are plenty of YouTubes on how to make your own oat milk, almond milk, etc., and they taste better than a lot of the ones in the store. Not saying you need to do it now, but it is possible should the need arise. If you go that route, take a multivitamin to supplement what you're missing in the vitamin added milks.

In this amazing group most have common sense of what is healthy. Let’s just keep on being healthy. Healthy foods, no-moderate alcohol, moderate junk food

Thanks Katsolo - I don't HAVE to have milk. But I like my morning hot chocolate and like milk in Cream of wheat - I have 8 packages in my "inventory" I'd like to use up. The almond milk works for hot chocolate and after that I have hundreds of various flavors of tea bags including a box (100)of the only kind I used to buy - Lipton black tea.

Thanks Rosio - I'm hoping not to go anywhere for at least 2 weeks, including trips to the grocery store. Right now I am not buying much fresh produce but have lots of canned and frozen fruits and vegetables and bags of split peas and lentils, cans of beans and lots of rice. Other than the butterfingers I was able to stay away from my comfort foods, none of which is healthy.

Thanks Damablack! I went back to the store. Milk had been delivered! Got a gallon of fat free. Also got a back of potatoes as I saw the guy stacking them. The last 2 times I've been to that market the potato shelves were bare. Not sure what I'll do with them, but they last much longer than other produce. Thought about buying a couple cans of soup. The soup isle was bare, with just 2 or 3 cans of cream of asparagus sitting there all alone. All the canned meat was gone two - tuna, spam. Thought about chips or cookies but stuck with the milk and potatoes. Plan on staying home for at least 2 weeks now - it's okay to walk the dog and he enjoyed that this morning now that the rain has stopped.

Sounds like you are good Fritzy. Nicely worked!!!

What is sad truly sad is that if everyone just bought what they need each week there would be no shortages at all. Additionally we would not strain the supply chain. Good luck and god bless the west coast. East coast isn't doing much better. (live in the tri-state area)

We are in the same situation in Michigan.

thanks Liv! Thanks Gzink - I think (hope) we will get that way soon, with people not feeling like they need to buy anything they see. I can understand when so many shelves are empty. But I realized later when I went back to get milk, that deliveries at that little store happen all during the day. Gz9gjg - hope you can stay safe and inside but also get some fresh air!
