Yesterday went really well. Calories were on target, which is great for a Saturday.

I spent a bit of money on myself today. I bought a HRM. I could have done with one that was really fancy, but in the end, I ended up with a Polar FT4 HRM in PINK!!!

I love my fitbit, don't get me wrong, it measures calories VERY well, and keeps me on target for daily moving around (versus sitting on my butt on the couch). However, it does not measure any activity that does not require steps or movement of the body. Working out on the bike or lifting weights or doing squats does not register the proper calorie burn.

Naturally, I needed to try it out. So I first did 30 minutes on the treadmill. The calories recorded were pretty close to the fitbit. After that, I did 10 minutes on the upright bike, and then 20 minutes of lifting weights, squats and other isolated exercises. The total calories for the full hour were 519. The calories according to my fitbit was 420. The difference was really in the second half of the workout.

I think having a HRM will encourage me to try new ways of working out, and focusing on burning calories in a different way. I also think that building muscle (not just working out on the treadmill) will be a good long term way to a healthier life.

But on to the weigh in...

Based on my fitbit, in the last 7 days, I have burned about 8,100 more calories than I ate. That should lead to a 2 pounds loss this week.

Alas, despite the math on the calories, the scale said 298.4 pounds. That's down 0.8 pounds from last week.

The pessimistic side of me is saying that all the hard work isn't paying off, and that I'll never get to 275 pounds by the end of May. However, that little voice is wrong!!

The truth is that having worked out 5 times within the last week, having worked out yesterday too, has caused a bit of soreness, nothing crazy, but just something I'd notice. Well that will cause some water retension that I wouldn't have if I sat on my butt. Also, I know that my body takes 2 weeks to show results of my hard work, so I will have to wait until next week to see the results of my hard work for next week.

However, I have to say that if next weekend, I see a 1 pound loss again, I'll need to re-evaluate whether this current plan will work.
298.4 lb Lost so far: 40.6 lb.    Still to go: 99.4 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

That sounds fantastic. I want one of those, but I am going to let you try it out first LOL. I would love to have a little more accurate way of measuring calories burned while strength traiing! OH, I saw a youtube video of a skinny girl who reviewed the Brazil Butt Lift videos, and after a whole week of the program, she gained 3 or 4 pounds and was also soar. She said it was probably the muscle fibers holding on to water till they repair and strengthen. Sounds accurate. Keep going girl, you are losing! I hope I can get into the gym 5 times this week!

Thanks Lizzy! So far the HRM is great! I just update my fitbit calories with what the HRM says, and it means that I can workout on the bike without wondering how much I'm burning.
