Debbie Cousins's Journal, 11 October 2019

Ok, so here's what's happening: I'm back to drinking a 2-liter Diet Coke every day (with ZERO water). I'm not exercising, or logging my food, or eating low-carb. I'm addicted lately to Tapioca Pudding -- I make a whole recipe of it (four 3/4-cup servings, which includes 3 cups of 2% milk and a slightly heaping 1/3 cup of granulated sugar), and I eat all four servings in a day. Every day. I've also been snacking on chips or Doritos at night, and eating lots of bread.

The only things I have been doing RIGHT are: I've kept setting up the Daily Accountability Challenges; I've been weighing and recording my weight every morning; I've been keeping up with the Notifications and Supporting the people who are in my groups and whom I'm following; and I've kept on track for reading the whole Bible in a year. I've also kept the kitchen clean and the living room tidy, the laundry caught up and have done some cooking for the family. I just can't seem to get back into the swing of things.

My weight is the highest it's been in over a year and a half at 203 pounds, and it's a full THIRTY POUNDS higher than it was in the Spring of this year when I was doing so well. The days seem very long. I've been sleeping in as late as possible and can hardly wait until it's finally time to go to bed again.

Just wanted to let y'all know where I'm at, because I know some of you really DO care! Thanks for that. I appreciate it!
203.0 lb Lost so far: 56.0 lb.    Still to go: 53.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Hi debbie, sorry for the troubles and glad you checked in! I too gained 25# since last spring, and i am guessing we are not alone! As someone who also deals with periodic depression, i think you have quite a good list of things you ARE keeping up with! Keeping up with cleaning and laundry and study is no small thing. As far as your program goes, maybe you can try to do one or two small things, just to ease back in. Like keep the diet coke but add in water. Be gentle with yourself.

We care Debbie because we know you care. You care about the people around you and about the people in your challenges. That is the light we see.

Awe Debbie you’re still doing weight check in and accomplishing other things. Support is wonderful. I would join a challenge, but I already do a lot of it and I don’t get on my laptop for FS unless someone tells me I have a pm or change my profile. It sounds great, but I also know that I am burning the candle at both ends right now and I can’t keep up with getting on the laptop. As a matter of fact I need to do something to lessen my load. Like ask for a withdrawal from one of my classes. I love how you share your personal stories. You can get back on track!! 💜💚💯

Debbie, I think about you and I care deeply about your well-being. Although I don't condone your current eating behavior, I know that sometimes you just have to hang on for dear life. Remember that I believe in you and every day I hope that this is the day you will find the inner strength to turn this thing around. You CAN do this. 💖💜💚💛💖

Much of what you are doing is amazing - staying on top of things with cleaning, etc. is hard. There is research about serotonin and the brain during the darker days of the year. With less light, we tend to crave more carbohydrates so it makes some sense why you are choosing the things you are eating.

Yes, we do care. You're keeping up with some things, so focus on that positive. Like Jen said, small goals. Hugs to you

making sure you get your time with the Lord every day is a wonderful accomplishment. I get mine in but do so first thing in the morning before my feet hit the floor.

Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” I am so glad to see this post Debbie! I too fell off the wagon and gained over 25lbs since spring. I also am doing another chronological reading of the bible. Are you happy at 200lbs? Try to maintain that for a time and gradually cut back. I am praying for you Debbie and I know God will get you through this. God Bless, Denny

I am so glad you are sharing. Your struggles are so hard, but I think so many really do care. Knowing your situation helps those of us who pray for you know better how to lift you up. God bless, you Debbie. Keep checking in, keep hoping, do what you can... On hour at a time! ♥️

I understand completely. A big part of what we do has to do with mind set. What do you think might get you back on track? Hope that doesn't come across as abrasive or judgemental, I truly mean it as an honest question. One of the reasons I am finding it easier now is aging and losing that being sense of taste that is hungry all the time. Or maybe not hunger, just wanting to put something in my mouth.

You got this girl! I hold on to that feeling of how I feel when I step on that scale and weigh less. I know how mindless eating can creep back in. Your new u starts now!🧜🏽‍♀️🌈👙🤗

It sounds like somewhere inside of your head you are listening to a voice that is trying to force you into a self destruct mode. Now what? Are you purposely going out and buying the soda, taking the time to make the tapioca pudding or is someone doing it for you?. If you are buying and cooking the pudding up yourself— you Can make a conscious decision to throw the box of tapioca away and drain the soda down the sink.

How are you doing with the new meds?

Days getting shorter and less light...it can slow you down. During the light of the day, open the drapes/blinds and let the light into the house! Go outside, sit in the shade, and appreciate the light...maybe bring your Bible and read...rather than inside. Just exposing yourself to more light might make a "happy" bulb go off inside! PLUS, you are staying out of the kitchen and tapioca! I don't know, it works for me when I want to get in the car and get chips! Be well. Keep challenging, because you are making a difference for YOURSELF and OTHERS. What about those tasty muffin/pancake recipes you post? Keep with it!

Debbie, I know how hard it is to claw one's life back from the jaws of immobilizing depression. When I was in day treatment for depression in April 2003, the first conditions of my therapy were to make my bed and get to the clinic on time each morning and wash, dry, and put away any dishes before I went to bed each night. Just maintaining a few simple chores was the springboard to recovery, providing a sense of control of your environment and a sense of accomplishment. You're doing that! Big step! Big accomplishment! Also, maintaining a discipline you love, like your daily Bible reading, is an exercise in faith and hope: Faith in the Lord's loving care and hopefulness in His promise healing. Consolidate these important gains and enjoy the feelings they generate.

The state is only temporary - you will get the strength to start again. Its so important to look after yourself - you certainly do look after everyone else. Good luck! Don't give up. Just have a rest and start over.

It's a journey - I'm in a similar place - up considerably more than when I was nearly at my goal weight. I remember that this is not you it's your hormones - you've redeveloped your taste for carbs and your body is craving them. I find it helpful in the first few days to not worry about calories. Gorge on cheese and steak and bacon if you like, just don't touch anything sweet. Your body and cravings will self correct. Then I focus on the small steps you lay out - which are utterly brilliant. Sending love and a 'let's do this!' xxx.

Can you change the pudding to skim milk and 1/2 the sugar?
