Day 5 of a planned 5 days of ‘no solid food’ fasting

I recently added sugar free candy to my daily ‘no solid food fast’ (because I suck on the candy until it melts into a liquid). It was messing up my carb count so I had t create my own entry because sugar alcohol carbs don’t count.

😎 Life is Good! Have a great day everyone!

I gave up SF candies - Werther's chewy caramels - because once I opened the bag, I just kept going back for more!

@gz9gjg - Yes, I agree they are 'a bad idea', but 'mentally' I 'needed something' so this was better than 'eating' and going into a 'binge' (binge eating *is* my problem). The biggest problem is that more than 6 pieces and it causes so much gas you get a stomach ache and mild diarrhea! 😒 No effect weight wise. I think the only reason I only lost a pound yesterday was the miso soup I had (sodium from the soy souce I put in it definitely causes water retention in me).

I don't think the SF candies are bad, but they are a weakness for me . . . easiest way for me to resist, is to not buy them . . .

@gz9gjg - I should not have implied that SF (sugar free) candies are 'bad'. I should have only said 'bad for me' :) However, I am currently out of the chewy kind and will simply not buy anymore today. Mostly because of the uncomfortable bloating they cause after 3 pieces...

Sugar Alcohols are high fodmap, they can give you a case of exploding sphincter.

@Phil.Tx - 😜😂

You know the trope about a gerbil on a wheel powering a Rube Goldberg-esque machine? I imagine a bear stuck in the trunk of a car being fed sugar-free candy as a make-shift turbo assist.

@Phil.tx - The effect of sugar alcohols on my body demonstrates enlightening concepts about how my body uses energy. The inability for the normal chemical process to break down and absorb the sugar alcohols still causes an effect (fermentation in my intestines which is considered 'outside' my body because its contents will be eventually leaving my body). This allows me to formulate my thinking on when things *are* absorbed. On my 'liquid fasts' my body will absorb a certain level of the macros. It does not care if these macros come from solid food or liquids. The only real difference is the speed (and therefore the rate) of this absorption.

That's a good way to look at it, I never considered it from that perspective. Thanks for the insight!

Interesting comment about your body not caring how it gets its macros, adef. My only worry would be micronutrients. Unlike you, I seem to tolerate artificial sweeteners except xylitol, and larger quantities of erythritol. Lately I have been using Allulose, a zero glycemic sweetener extracted from sugar; it causes me no GI problems.

@gz9gjg - If I don't get the GI issues (from the fermentation in my intestines) my concern is that my body is actually absorbing it. If that happens then it will affect my weight, right?

adef, you may be right. Allulose is low calorie, not zero - about 4 cal per teaspoon. But it really does appear to be zero glycemic, doesn't raise my BS.

Yeah that is what we used to say in my Atkins day that no reaction meant it was absorbed as carbs and that could be trouble. But I do not know if that is a proven fact. I do not eat them much. My stomach cannot deal with them. I may eat something with malititol to make "things" move once in awhile

@liv001 - Hmm so is it reasonable to say that when we *do* get a reaction, it means we have not 'absorbed it' and the because it was 'fermented' there is nothing left for my body to 'absorb', so no calorie hit?
