cocobutt's Journal, 07 September 2019

Was stressed out yesterday from a work deadline, which made me want to snack. I had 3 pieces of dark chocolate, a quarter cup of mixed nuts, and Harvest green pea snaps. Not terrible, but it's a troubling sign that I am vulnerable to stress eating.

Today we have to go to a birthday party and I'm sure I'll want some cake. I might allow myself a small piece.

Last night, Bill Maher was doing a monologue about how fat Americans have gotten over the last few decades and how it's contributing to the worst health crisis in the US. It's true. When I was growing up in the 60s, a classroom might have 2 people who were teased as the fat kids in class. (It's wrong, but I don't know of any place where you can escape bullies.) Nowadays, it seems like normal-weight people are in the minority, at least in the South. Maher called out us overweight people on our gluttony and said maybe a little shame wouldn't be such a bad thing. He said people shame others for smoking, why not overeating? I do admit that gluttony is my deadly sin, but for it to be so common, there are other factors at work beyond our control. Food processing and marketing for one. A long time ago, eating between meals was unusual because processed snacks and fast foods were not common. Having to drive instead of walk everywhere is another factor. Mom and I talked about how we had to walk to school and the store in the 60s because Dad had to take our only car to work. It's not just gluttony that makes it a struggle to maintain a healthy weight in the US.

The food lobby has a lot to answer for, plus the government, media and doctors. They pushed low fat - and the food industry responded by adding sugar to processed foods. Doctors piled on, assuming what's good for a few, is good for all - like baby aspirin, sodium restrictions, don't eat red meats. The media publicizes bits and pieces, and contradictory storylines alternate.

It’s difficult to break habits but at least you were aware of the stress issue. For me, it would be better to pre-plan a small slice of cake but we’re all different so whatever works for you. 🍰
