Day 7 of a planned 11 day fast

I did a post yesterday: "How I lost 4 pounds in one day (again)" https://bit.ly/2xYXc0e that covers how my day went yesterday. This explains the drop today (basically I ran 7 miles).

What I want to share is my sleepless night last night. I drank some bone broth and nearly 2 liters of water and then went to bed at my normal time. But, my body was wide awake.

Here is what I 'think' my body was saying:

"
Oh man! what did he do today! He lifted weights and then went on a 7 mile run and then went for another 1 hour walk with his wife afterwards! This guy has left me with a TON of work to do to get everything back in order. Oh man! I have to get the blood glucose back into acceptable range, I have to get the pancreas on the same page with the insulin. God knows the liver is gonna bitch but we gotta do what we gotta do...

... Now this guy has finally laid down I can get to work. I wish him luck trying to sleep while I turn all these processes on but he brought all this on himself, homeostasis is real and it is my job to make it happen...

... Now lets see what I have to work with. I've little glycogen to work with in the liver because he flushed that out with all the exercise, he even dumped out most of the stores in the muscles with the weight work outs. So glycogenolysis is out. Hey liver, Is ketogenesis online or are we still in gluconeogenesis? At least he gave me plenty of water because I'm gonna need that to bind to the glucose... (https://bit.ly/2LCYEr7)
"

This could all be my imagination. Maybe it was just the latte :) Anyway I got to sleep eventually woke up feeling great.

Today I plan just a 5 mile run and a walk with the wife.

Also, because of the latte 'issue' yesterday (I took in 14 carbs that I simply did not need during a 'water' fast), I found a new drink at Starbucks that I think Dr. Fung would approve of. It is called the Caffè Misto. Get it in the "short" size and it is only 5 carbs. It is only coffee and whole milk (As Dr. Fung suggests - for some reason he does not advise skim milk). I had one, waited an hour and my glucose reading shot up only 9 points.

Out of curiosity, why do you choose milk over cream?

@cjodyssey - Dr. Fung says no to the cream :( https://bit.ly/2Mh1za7 But, he does allow milk: https://bit.ly/2xbNsO6

@marshakanady - Thanks. After day 3 it really is easy for me. I just like Big Mac's and I will eat one when this fast is over :) ...And then get back on the fast...

In your links he says you can have cream and that he puts cream in his coffee. He said that cream generally does not undo any positives. For milk he says milk technically does not fall within the guidelines of a true fast but having milk or cream in coffee often improves compliance. He doesn't say no to cream so you can have it, if you want it. It has more fat but fewer carbs than milk.

You are doing great, you are really inspirational about fasting!

@cjodyssey - I was going with the "...In others, it may undo some of the positives" part :) With the milk I felt it was solid yes.

Nice work, brother! I'm pushing out an extra day until Monday. 88:8. Will be my longest fast yet. Definite plateau breaker. Thanks for the inspiration! Let's go! #stillgrindtime #getserious #stayhungry

@Steven Anthony - Thanks! It may be a month or more before I can try another 11 day fast. This weekend was special because we did not have any 'events' planned. Dr. Fung says "Plan your fasting around your life, not your life around your fasting" :)

@jimmiepop - Just saw your numbers, you're killing it! :)

Perhaps your body parts spent a lot of the night congratulating each other for being able to keep up with you all day. And the best part is that you woke up feeling great. Good job!

You are well on your way to that Big Mac!

@cjodyssey - I was basing my earlier statements about the coffee from the audiobook. I finally downloaded it to my Kindle so I could post the entire thing: - - - - - What you can’t add to your coffee: * Try to avoid low-fat and skim milks; whole milk is better * Powdered dairy products * Natural or artificial sweeteners of any kind - - - - - What you can add to your coffee: * Coconut oil * Medium-chain triglyceride oil (MCT oil) * Butter * Ghee * Heavy whipping cream (35% fat) * Half and half * Whole milk * Ground cinnamon, for flavor - - - - - Fung, Jason; Moore, Jimmy. The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended (p. 254). Victory Belt Publishing. Kindle Edition.

@CrashtestDawnie - … and I will be back on a 5 days fast that Monday!

Gotcha. It's personal preference. I would choose half and half or cream because of the very low carb count(plus milk doesn't really satisfy me in coffee). But everyone has their own tastes. I just wondered why not cream :-)

Isn't fasting induced insomnia a known and well researched thing, caused by fast-induced epinephrine and orexin spikes? The adaptive explanation might be that your body knows it needs food, fires up the epinephrine to release fat stores for energy and to, along with the orexin, to keep you awake to go procure food. Think I read that somewhere (Fung?).

@jimmiepop - Thanks. That makes sense.
